When I was a child I wanted to be a teacher. I find happiness in helping others learn because learning can be challenging. When I was in first grade my teacher called on me to read and I didn't know how. That memory is vivid in my mind because if it weren't for my teachers and parents helping me I wouldn't be where I am today.
I have taught PK and Second Grade in Chicago, and Kindergarten for the last two years in the greater Cleveland area. I am a firm believer in teaching strategies and teaching through play. Worksheets are not my first, second or third approach to teaching because it is rote. Anyone can memorize, I believe it's important to teach children the strategies of higher levels of thinking.
Math curriculum today has changed. Children are required to explain their thinking. I know various games and how to apply number talks to improve your child's mental math skills.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
