About Lisa

"Nine tenths of education is encouragement."

Anatole France

I believe in the pedagogical paradigms that elicit the best results. My first tutoring experience was in Middle School as a 14 year old! As a part time college professor I am comfortable with one-on-one interactions. Students who seek out my professional time will be able to apply the concepts I teach and utilize them through out their academic lives.
Students who are reticent about writing or public speaking will be able to manage shyness and confidence issues after interactions. I follow Maria Montessori principals and postulates. The self directed learner can continue to inform him or herself about the best paths to learning.

Students who seek out my assistance will be able to benefit from my ability to read and speak in Spanish, French and Portuguese. I can hear the language substitutions and accents and help provide strategies to clarify them. As a published author and editor I am comfortable providing written critiques in grammar for students. I have taught English courses at Capital Community College. In addition I have been a bi-lingual tutor for the Hartford Public School System. My editing experience includes my professional thesis and the Journal of Public Health. In this capacity I read and recommended articles for publication.

Adult and Teen-Age students who are seeking an interaction to obtain measurable results will benefit from contact with me. Because I am still a student pursuing my PhD, I am empathetic with those challenges that adults face. Parents with elementary aged child diagnosed with a learning disability can reach out to me with confidence. My son has a special education label. I understand dyslexia, audio processing issues and autism. In High School my internship was at a school for the deaf. This experience is directly linked to the pursuit of my doctorate in Communications.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

Using my gift for language I have worked with college and elementary students to master English. Students who are helped by me gain confidence in using English in social settings, at work and to pursue their studies. I have been a bi-lingual tutor in Hartford Public Schools for monolingual Spanish speakers.

Grammar

The student who seeks help from me will be able to increase their consistent application of grammatical rules. I will be able to correct papers written by students across elementary, secondary and high school subjects. College students will benefit from my experience teaching English at Goodwin College where I graded papers for content, correct formatting of papers and college level use of language. Students will improve their ability to apply rules like subject verb agreement, use of tense and voice. I will be able to assist students with writing sentences and paragraphs using the rules of grammar in English.

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking at Goodwin College in East Hartford, CT in 2013 and 2014. As a radio personality (1999-2007) I mentored aspiring DJs. Produced over 250 Information Programs and voiced station IDs. I can conduct exercises to reduce nervousness, instruct others on the correct use of PowerPoint. Provide students with communication strategies for connecting with an audience. Comfortable using Skype and Oovoo to record and practice speaking assignments.

Reading

The reading skills I can assist elementary students with are: identifying reading readiness, modeling sounds, remembering sight words and increasing comprehension. Middle schools students will learn how to appreciate books, value time reading alone and learning about new subjects through reading. I will be able to engage parents of those I tutor in the process as well. I learned how to tutor students in reading in Hartford Public Schools.
