About Lutetia

A recent graduate from UC Berkeley majoring in Molecular and Cell Biology, I am currently a medical student at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Besides a passion for health care, I also love teaching and tutoring. During my freshman and sophomore year, I worked for the UC Berkeley's East Asian Languages and Culture (EALC) Department and tutored all of their students taking Chinese 1A/1B (~100 students). Since I grew up in Shanghai, I feel very fortunate to be able to teach my mother tongue and introduce my students to Chinese culture. I also tutored Biology and Physics at UCB's Student Learning Center (SLC). Most recently, I worked as a Clinician at Lindamood-Bell Learning Processes during the summer and learned valuable methods teaching reading and writing to students (ages 5-17) with learning difficulties.

I enjoy interacting with students from all ages and I am very flexible in terms of tutoring methods. Communication is the most important factor for me throughout the tutoring process. I believe it is a collaborative and creative process instead of a rigid and mono-directional one. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I grew up in Shanghai and received traditional Chinese Education in local Elementary and High Schools. While studying at UC Berkeley I worked for the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department during my freshman and sophomore years as their tutor for all students taking Chinese 1A/1B. During my junior and senior years I became a grader for their oral assignments. Since sophomore year I have also been giving private lessons to students who wish to advance their speaking, reading, and writing skills. I teach reading and writing in simplified Chinese (more commonly used in Mainland China) and reading in traditional Chinese.

MCAT

The first time I took the exam October 2014 I received a 30/45 in the 79% percentile. Not satisfied with my score, I worked hard to prepare to take it again. This time I had to take the new MCAT in April 2015 and I received a 516/528 in the 95% percentile. Having taken the MCAT twice and achieved significant improvement, I have the tools and a clear understanding of the study methods best suited for the exam.

Organic Chemistry

As an MCB major at UC Berkeley, I have taken organic chemistry Chem 3A (A for both lecture and lab portion) and Chem 3B (B+ for lecture portion and A+ for lab portion). I have had experience tutoring my friends while taking the class and also afterwards. This past year, I reviewed many of the concepts learned in these two classes while studying for the MCAT and gained a deeper understanding of the subject. My aim is to help students find recurring schemes in organic chemistry and connect each concept instead of seeing them as stand-alone reactions. Each student is unique in the way he/she studies organic chemistry and I am great at tailoring my sessions to a method that works for the student.
