About Christopher

Welcome. I am Christopher, a 38-year-old male adept at teaching Mathematics, Physics, Biology and the Sciences. I have been a high school teacher for over 16 years and have recently relocated to Cleveland Ohio to live with my wife and three (3) beautiful children.

As a Jamaican teacher we are nurtured into believing that every child can learn, every child must learn; hence the teacher must first begin to reach the students at their level. When there is a good understanding of where the student is academically, then academically, growth will be established. This mindset makes me a perfect tutor for you or your child.

I love teaching and the reward that it brings; it is easily one of my best talents. My success has transcended from the classroom into administration: head of the science department in September 2007, Staff supervisor in January 2008, Dean of Students in September 2010 and Assistant Principal since January of 2011. With my current position, I always maintained a teaching class at grade 10 & 11. The teaching style I use is completely dependent on the particular student being taught. I'm a big fan of the adage ‘Give a man a fish, and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will eat for the rest of his life’. My objective is to teach a child not only content or how to pass an examination, but how they best learn so that they can teach themselves and others.

I enjoy using applicable references that are relevant to the child so that they will more easily grasp the concepts. With this in mind I accepted a job as script marking supervisor with Caribbean Secondary Examination Council (CSEC) in the area of Biology. In addition, I became a contracted National School Inspector for Jamaican Educational Institutions. Both these jobs gave me valuable insights on how different students learn, teachers teach and strategies used to enhance student learning.

When I teach a student, I seek first to understand the student and how he/she thinks. I find it is very important to have good rapport and communication with the student so I understand how he/she views the subject and the difficulties of it. To be better able to manage these sessions I became a contractual officer with the Child Development Agency (CDA) in Jamaica.

Mathematics and Physics (Science Field) is/are not seen as "favorite subject(s)" to a lot of students. Hence, a personalized approach along with one-on-one student sessions is my ultimate strategy for learning. We know that every child develops on a different learning curve, which is why the tutoring process is so crucial. Working individually with a child can help them overcome some of the frustration and confusion that comes along with learning in a crowded classroom. The process continues with making "conceptual bridges" from what they know to what they are having difficulty understanding. The ultimate goal here is achieving that fine balance between guiding and directing the student’s thoughts on the topic and following the student in their own line of thinking about the subject. The student needs to learn to have confidence in his/her own thoughts on the subject and in his/her own ability to master it.

Finally, I have a great amount of patience and understanding which at times are needed to help a child develop their own learning style and guide them to work through the problems at their own pace to ensure that they truly understand the material. Learning is a step by step process and I know that I can guide each child through the steps they need to take to complete any and all challenges they may face, not just in school, but in life.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I played Chess since I was in High school where I represented my school college and university in various competition. I current play the game via the internet both socially and in tournaments.
