One of the most challenging things about the college process is gaining the needed confidence on standardized tests. I've been helping students learn the ropes and exceed their expectations on the PSAT, SAT and ACT since I began working for Kaplan in 1993. Since then, I've helped hundreds of students identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop a personalized plan to maximize their score. I'm proud to say that I have a large base of former students that went on to be commended, semi-finalists or finalists on the PSAT. While every student's achievement will be different, I have what it takes to help you maximize your experience. Worried about the new PSAT (2015 and beyond) or the new SAT (2016)? I'm very familiar with the new changes and would love to help you demystify these brand new testing experiences.

I'm new to Ohio, having only lived here for 4 years. Previously, I worked in high schools in Missouri and Utah. Currently, I am a full-time AP Spanish / Concert Band teacher at a local high school and I'd be happy to work with students on those topics as well. My students have a 96% passing rate on the AP Spanish test and I'm comfortable working with students from beginning to advanced levels. Where my schedule may not be as flexible as some, I can assure you that your time will be respected and well-worth your investment. With something as important as these tests, you can trust me as an experienced teacher with expertise in not only the content areas but also how high school students think and work.

Spanish

I have a MA in Spanish Pedagogy, a BA in Spanish teaching (both from Brigham Young University - Utah), & 21 years teaching experience in middle school and high school Spanish. I am currently employed as a high school Spanish teacher and also work as a consultant for the College Board reading for the AP Spanish exam.

English

ACT English,

ACT English

I have always had a great interest in grammar and how things fit together. In 1993, I started a job for Kaplan, coaching students on the ACT (including the English portion)and have worked with students since then to not only improve their writing but also understand how to maximize their score on the ACT English section and other similar tests. My approach is not to pound students with a list of interminable exceptions. Rather, I show them four key principles that will help them use what they already know to maximize their ACT English score and improve their overall writing. I currently hold a Master's Degree in Teaching (Spanish) and I love helping students realize their educational goals.
ACT Reading,

ACT Reading

I've been working with the ACT/SAT/PSAT since 1993 with a special emphasis on the verbal (Reading/Writing/English) portions. Reading comprehension is very much about understanding the author's tone and point of view and then finding the essential evidence that he or she uses to develop the story or essay. My degrees in composition and Spanish have helped me to learn how to focus on these key skills. As a full time teacher of Spanish (literature) I have spent many hours helping students break apart complicated reading passages to find the core principles - those things about which test takers love to ask.
SAT Reading,

SAT Reading

As a full-time language teacher, I have worked with students of all levels to help them improve their comprehension of both written passages in English and Spanish. I use many methods that I learned while working full time for Kaplan as a test prep coach but also my specialty for my M.A. degree was on literacy, especially focused on increasing comprehension through reading. My first goal is to help the students understand how to make the passage make sense. Through reverse-outlining, topic sentence and structural identification and a strong focus on how elements play together, we first break down the passage and then we look at the three major types of questions and how they relate to this structure. I have tutored for the ACT and SAT since 1993 and have worked full time in language acquisition since 1998.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

While teaching at Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School in Joplin, Missouri, I developed and directed the test preparation course, required of all juniors and seniors. Our focus was on the PSAT and SAT. I also taught summer courses in Missouri for 3 years designed to prepare students to take the exam. Several of the students in the course went on to become commended, semi-finalists or finalists. I have since continued to teach PSAT / SAT / ACT courses in Ohio. Previously, I was employed by Kaplan as an ACT instructor. I have also taught grammar and composition courses (Spanish and English) for almost 20 years. Much of the patterns that are tested on the SAT come from the core-building blocks that are emphasized with each writing assignment. The goal is to write clearly and directly (the concept espoused by the College Board) in all contexts and languages, always using the best possible grammar. I am also an AP Reader for the College Board, so I am very familiar with the scoring procedures utilized in scoring their free response sections.

ACT Math

I have tutored ACT / SAT math since 1993, after successfully earning a 5 score on the AP Calculus test and a 36 on the math section of the ACT. In Missouri, I taught both traditional and summer review courses on math (specifically tailored to standardized tests). In my teaching I focus mostly on alternative ways to find solutions quickly as well as the key basic building blocks of math that enable a student to look at the bigger picture.

Trumpet

I began playing the trumpet in 1982 and have played professionally since 1989. I have a Bachelor of Music in Composition (1998) in addition to completing all of the Performance requirements. I have played professionally in touring Broadway shows in Salt Lake City, Missouri and Ohio as well as on the Royal Viking Sun (cruise ship on the Cunard line) in 1995. I have taught trumpet lessons since 1988 and currently teach concert band at a local high school. I am proficient in both classical and jazz styles.

Science

ACT Science

Although not a professional scientist or science teacher, I've tutored students for the ACT Science Reasoning test since 1993 with great results. I have a simple formula for each of the three passage types that allows students to look past the complicated jargon and instead focus on what the test writers are looking for: the ability to read and understand graphs & charts and to quickly synthesize the information while properly using the provided evidence. Graduate school helped a great deal with this as I had to work through the complicated statistics required for my thesis. Many of my students have seen great jumps in their ACT Science Reasoning Score after reorienting themselves to the principles of the test.

Excellent tutor.

Rick focused on my son's weaknesses in grammar, worked on strategies for difficult math problems, as well as strategies for reading and science. I believe he was very good at bringing out my son's knowledge and giving him the right amount of added information to equip him to work on his own in a way that is making him more calm and confident as he takes his ACT. Many practices have shown much improvement in his scores and I am hoping his next actual test will show the same.

Great session

Rick helped my son look at the ACT preparation a little differently then he had been preparing. Nice change of pace and focusing on the areas where he can most improve and meet his goal.

Anthony, 4 lessons with Rick

Very knowledgeable and flexible to work around my grandson's busy schedule.

Kyle met with Rick the past few years to increase his knowledge of Spanish. He was excellent at assessing the grade level needs and helped Kyle succeed each year. Rick also worked with Kyle to prepare for the SAT and ACT tests, which was extremely helpful. I would strongly recommend Rick for tutoring. Kyle enjoyed working with him and was always ready for his weekly meetings.

Tremendous

Rick defines what a true teacher should be. My son was at ease once working with Rick. He finally felt he had an instructor that cared that he learned Spanish.
