About Valerie

Salvete, discipuli et parentes! (See end for Ancient Greek, English, and Art History)

I love Latin and classics in general and I want everyone else to love it, too. Sometimes this can be difficult when a student is frustrated. To help students overcome obstacles, I assess their needs and develop a program to help them succeed. I like to work directly with the student while proceeding with the understanding of and consent to my approach from parents. This can include homework, other texts, assessments, etc. depending on what they need and what would best help them. I expect that parents will help monitor any home study I might assign to be sure it gets done. I have been told that I am incredibly patient when teaching and that my passion for the subject matter shines brightly.

Since I have taught all levels of Latin, including AP, to students from grade 5 through college undergraduates, I have worked with a wide variety of students, including a few with Aspergers, with many different problems with the materials from study habits to grammar comprehension. In particular, having taught at an all boys school, I completed extensive training in how to teach boys specifically.

In addition to ten years of teaching and tutoring, I taught a private student whose school did not offer Latin and Ancient Greek. So, I developed a successful course for him. In the end, he won gold medals on his National Latin Exams, silver for Greek, was invited to and participated in a competitive Summer in Rome program through the University of Dallas, and finally, was admitted both to Harvard summer school for Ancient Greek during high school and as a classics major to Harvard last fall.

During summers and school years, I took great advantage of opportunities (including AP workshops) to continue my own studies. I have also traveled extensively, with students, as a student, & for vacation, through Italy (ten times) as well as Greece (twice) and several other countries in Europe. Finally, I have volunteered with classics organizations. All of this together gives me a comprehensive understanding of what is expected from a Latin student.

I would be happy to go into more detail about anything I have written here when we meet in person. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions of me. I really love helping students learn Latin and never tire of it, so I hope you will choose me to assist with your Latin studies!

P.S. Please inquire further if you are interested in Ancient Greek tutoring, Art History, help with learning English vocabulary or to polish up your English vocab, grammar, pronunciation, etc. I have experience with these as well!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I have a BA and MA in classics and taught Latin for 10 years. I minored in art history for both. In addition, I prepared curriculum for an AP high school Art History course. I've traveled extensively and have been lucky enough to visit many of the world's greatest museums, historic locations, archaeological sites, and other places of artistic, architectural and historic note.

Classics

I have both a BA and an MA in classics. In addition, I taught in my subject areas for 10 years. As a classics major, Latin teachers don't usually get to make use of other aspects of "classics" whereas I was lucky enough to also teach Ancient Greek and Etymology. As far as Art History, I minored in it for both degrees, have traveled extensively world-wide to museums, and prepped an AP course that I never was able to teach. Right now I am again in grad school pursuing an MA in Forensic Linguistics.

Grammar

I also taught etymology and Ancient Greek. In addition, I studied forensic linguistics and completed one of two years of a MA in linguistics at Hofstra University in 2013/2014.

Latin

I have a BA and MA in classics and taught Latin for 10 years.

Vocabulary

I also taught etymology as an instructor at Texas Tech while a grad student and also as independent study when I was a Latin teacher.
