In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
All of my qualifications and training in Orton Gillingham have qualified me to work with ADD/ADHD. I have worked with numerous children facing these challenges over my fourteen years of working as an Orton Gillingham tutor. I have worked with most students for an extended period of time, approximately twice weekly for two years, depending on a student's individual pace of learning.
I am an Orton-Gillingham tutor, certified by the Orton-Gillingham Academy in initial training, as well as advanced. Orton-Gillingham is a multi-sensory, structured approach to teaching phonics and reading to students with dyslexia and other recognized learning disabilities (ADHD,ADD). The approach was created by Samuel Orton, a neurobiologist, at Harvard during the 1930's. It is the original basis for all phonics programs in use today. I have taught using O-G for eleven years and taught approximately 2800 50-minute, one-to-one, individual lessons tailored to individual students. I am patient, creative, and enjoy working to assist the learning process.
In the twelve years I have tutored reading and spelling, using the Orton Gillingham phonics approach, I have worked with many k-6th graders. During that time as an adjunct I have worked with system of learning sight words, grammar, punctuation, writing skills, both composition and handwriting; and also vocabulary. Assistance with essays, outlines and initial organization of projects were addressed on an as needed basis. All of these subjects are integral to reading skills. When needed I been called upon by a parent to work with elementary basic math for the school year, and to assist with test preparation, such as science final exams, midterms, or Ohio Graduation Testing. I am currently tutoring 10th grade geometry, which includes many math basics. I look forward to being given an opportunity to assist your student.
I have tutored math for several summers using Saxon Math Book to the same student. He was a seventh grader at Lawrence. I will be happy to provide a reference. I also tutored High school Geometry during the last school year to a tenth grader who was a Berea High school student. I usually adhere to the textbook student is using, and follow the program.
My eleven years experience as a language tutor, working with all ages to achieve fluency in reading and spelling skills, requires me to have a good working knowledge of English Grammar. I, personally, have a wide vocabulary, and correct grammar usage is indirectly part of what I teach.
I am a Certified Orton-Gillingham Tutor. I have Initial and Advanced training through the 32nd degree Scottish Rite Masons accredited by the Orton-Gillinham Academy. I have eleven years experience in teaching phonics with multi-sensory approach to remedial language. My experience has been at an IMSLEC approved learning center. I have taught around 3,000 one-on-one lessons in this subject.
I have, over 11 years, taught approximately 2900 individual one to one 50 minute lessons in the Orton- Gillingham approach; a phonics program that is the source of all phonics programs. It is extremely effective and teaches the ability to encode (spelling) which is essential to decoding (reading) in a multisensory structured way, and in so doing, remediating deficits in essential skills and concept that may have been presented but forgotten, or not understood, and are now lost. Sometimes aspects fall through the cracks. I feel I apply my knowledge in a patient, non- intimidating way using this success oriented technique.

During my 11 years experience as an Orton-Gillingham language tutor, writing skills have been addressed as needed. I have worked with a special needs student (dyslexia, autism spectrum) on numerous writing projects associated with Lawrence School and Julie Billiart, both schools for special needs. Additionally I have worked with handwriting, both manuscript ( printing) and cursive to achieve a uniform and legible result.
