About Melanie T.

In Art: I am certified by the State of Ohio to teach Art to students K-12, and I hold a Bachelor's in Art Education from Kent State University. I also teach Adults in any Art subject they need help in, through my own part-time business. I travel on location to a home or agreed upon location that is suitable for relaxing and making Art. I've also completed one year of Graduate School in Art Therapy and Counseling at Ursuline in Pepper Pike, OH. Ethically according to the American Art Therapy Association, I am able to provide Art as Therapy to clients through private pay, but I cannot provide Art Therapy as a therapist. In other words I can provide the art experience which has its own benefits, but not the therapeutic interpretation or counseling that an art therapist is board certified to provide. In the past two years I have worked with one student with Aspergers, one with Anxiety & Depression Disorders, and one with possible Crohn's Disease. These were in the capacity of Art Teaching but the students benefited by the experience personally as well as in gaining art skills.

In Phonics and Reading Comprehension, I have experience through a local Tutoring agency and completed coursework with them before tutoring assignments were given. I am able to take my own students apart from the agency. I have had two years' experience with students making progress up to three grade levels higher in post testing after 24 hours of tutoring. If English isn't your native tongue, you will be able to speak it recognizably, by the time I am done tutoring with you.

In Basic Math, I can help with basic Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division. I can also help with Fractions and Decimals. I also have experience in this area through the same tutoring agency as the Phonics and Reading Comprehension. I have seen students make significant progress in this area in post testing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

While working with my present employer in tutoring students I have worked with 3 students who have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD in various subject areas over the last three years. I've learned to meet them where they are, and engage them in the learning activity so that learning takes place. My present employer specializes in helping kids with all types of learning disabilities, and I have sat in on several IEP meetings for these types of kids over the years as well as construct lesson plans that keep them involved with what they are trying to learn. I've also incorporated Kinesthetic activities to ward off some of the attention deficit.

Aspergers

In 2010 I worked with a high school student who had Aspergers, in order to do ceramics. I found him to be creative, smart, funny, and innovative.

Currently (2013) I work with another young man with Aspergers who is in Junior High and we are doing Digital Photography. He is a gentleman, picks up on things easily, smart, and we have a lot of fun while studying and practicing photography.

So I have had the ability to work with both of these students in regular subjects and both have been successful in what they are studying.

Bible Studies

We will investigate the character and nature of God and Jesus Christ through passages in the Holy Bible's New and Old Testaments. With a view towards knowing God in a personal way.

I have served in various Church Ministries for over 25 years at Grace CMA in Middleburg Hts., Ohio, including Church Planting, Soloist, Bible Study Leader, Sunday School Teacher, and I became certified as a leader/teacher in Evangelism Explosion Outreach. I am also a Born Again Christian, and have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Drawing

Drawing I, is the first stage in learning how to create great art. One must be able to see accurately in order to create an image. We will explore the elements of drawing with line, tones, shades, textures, patterns, and perspective, to compose finished art for framing.

I hold a current Ohio Special Teaching Certificate in Visual Art grades K-12 and am also an experienced artist having sold my work to several people in the US.

Elementary (K-6th)

Through Northcoast Education Services, I have become certified to teach Basic Math at the Elementary Level and Phonics, Reading, and Writing in the Richards Read/Writing Methods and their Basic Math Courses.

My students have always progressed to a higher level than when we started. We take a basic Math and Reading tests at the beginning of the tutoring and the same exact one at the end, then compare the results. We use appropriate assessment tests for the grade level.

I became certified in these methods in the fall of 2008 and am still using them with success.

Painting

Painting I, is the first stage in learning how to create great art with paint. We will explore the methods and mediums of painting with line, tones, shades, textures, patterns, and perspective, to compose finished art for framing.

I hold a current Ohio Special Teaching Certificate in Visual Art grades K-12 and am also an experienced artist having sold my work to several people in the US.

Phonics

We will study the sounds of each letter and how they are made with the tongue, teeth, lips and use a workbook to practise how these sounds are related to each other affecting their pronounciation.

I am certified in the Richards Read Phonics Program created by North Coast Education Services and have been using this program for 3 years to help students decode words in what they read. Students have jumped from 1 to 4 grades levels after studying this program.

Reading

I use the Richards Read System to teach reading to individuals. This system will help you learn how to decode words on the printed page and with practice you will be able to identify word sounds and relationships between the letters so you can pronounce them and know what you are reading. I have had students jump as much as 4 grade levels after receiving this training.

I am certified by North Coast Education Services to teach reading to people of all ages and have utilized their system for 3 years now.

Special Needs

I have worked with kids on a tutoring basis who have a variety of needs such as Depression, Bi-polar Disorder, Low Cognizance, ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Asperger's, Shyness, and Anxiety for the last 3 years. I attend IEP meetings and offer input to the school systems, counselors, and parents regarding how the child is doing with the subjects we are working on, and the progress of their behavior. This past year I worked with 5 High School children but in the past I've worked with children as young as 1st grade.
