I wanted a tutor to help my son with his verbal communications skills for Chinese. She came in and started talking with him and was able to access his skill level, asked to see the materials that he had worked with during his summer course and what they had covered during the school year.
Then she understood the full range of his exposures as well as his own skills and began helping him focus on the tones that he was producing imperfectly. This was a problem that he knew that he had that he just could not fix. The one-on-one allowed him to focus on this without embarrassment. After practicing 30-40 times your ear can really start to 'hear' the tones. They worked on several other things that my son wanted clarification on.
It was a great first session.
I highly recommend Hui Sian.
Very intelligent and responsive to forming a plan, helping the student to reach a goal. This was our most important criteria so she gets 5 stars.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
