About Mary

I am a licensed professional civil engineer, and a mother of two elementary aged children. After leaving the engineering field to focus on parenting, I worked as a substitute teacher. As a mother of two gifted children, I work hard to provide them with engaging experiences that help them grow. I support their training in violin, piano, ballet, horseback riding and FUN! I have done short-term and long-term teaching, in math, science, language arts, and general studies at the middle school level. For fun, I perform keynote presentations to children K-12 to inspire them in S.T.E.A.M. programs.

In my career and parenting, I have learned that it is important for people to understand the relationship between what they are learning and how it relates to the real world. I can make powerful and exciting connections between coursework and life, on many levels.

For 20 years, I have worked on mega-design projects like highways, airports, railroads (think Brent Spence Bridge, Streetcar, O'Hare Airport), as well as school designs (Lebanon Elementary and Milford Elementary). For 15 years I worked on very large projects, and then worked on smaller, faster paced projects. I have been a surveyor, an inspector, a project manager, and leader. In teaching and presenting, I have honed my ability to connect with children and young adults and like to make learning fun and relevant. I also understand that sometimes a goal requires hard work and persistence, and that failure can be part of the lifelong process of being a strong successful person.

As an engineer, math is the name of the game! Math is sometimes abstract, and hard to relate to the real world. I can show how numbers and equations apply in daily life, their power, and tips to make it stick in your brain. I like tutoring math subjects up through pre-calculus because these students tend to want to give up. I want to help them tackle that math and win!

I have over 20 years of Civil Engineering experience. Civil Engineering is a practical field, and is easily understandable by many (we can all understand how a road is designed and built). The nuance and importance of detail, iteration, and spatial relationships is revealed in the final product, and those who practice those skills consistently become experts. As a natural leader, I can teach young engineers-to-be how to hone their skills, practice being thorough and complete, and elevate their communication skills. The latter topic is a critical and forgotten skill in the field of science that has incredible value and power.

I am the grammar police! Spelling is step one of being an excellent communicator. Learning to spell involves tips, tricks, and practice. Our language is evolving rapidly with the incorporation of technology and quick messaging. Understanding the root of spelling, grammar, and language will allow for more powerful use and combination of new and old communication methods. Being able to "walk in both worlds" of new and old communication will provide an advantage over your peers and competition.

I can offer a relaxed, fun, engaging and memorable learning experience. Contact me soon to schedule lessons, so you can get the time and dates that you need! I am here to help you succeed and feel like you can achieve your goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Civil Engineering

I am a licensed professional civil engineer. I have 20 years of design, construction, design-build, site development, project management, and leadership experience. For 6 years, I was the lead GeoPak expert for a global engineering firm. Projects I have worked on include mega-transportation projects for highways, airports, railroads and EIS document development.

Precalculus

As an engineer, I have a significant background in math and science. I have also been a long-term substitute teacher, and individual student mentor/tutor. Using the methods prescribed by the schools program (common core, private), I teach the student to break down calculus into multiple step process in which the student can check their work along the way. I explain how the problems relate to real-world solutions in engineering, and encourage iteration and perseverance...calculus requires lots of practice.

Public Speaking

I offer a professional conditioning program that I have delivered in various engineering firms during my employment, and continue to offer today. In this program, I assess individual capabilities and goals, facilitate the creation of a personal brand and message, and assist in delivery practice for varying venues.

As a keynote and small group leader for STEAM programs at the K-12 level, I assist children in understanding and creating a personal brand, presenting themselves to their peers and adults, and using technology to begin building their future.
