I am an engineer in the automotive business. I received my Bachelors in Industrial Engineering after serving six years in the Navy as a nuclear trained machinist mate on a nuclear powered submarine. I have tutored during my undergraduate studies and off and on during my career as an engineer. The main reason I enjoy tutoring is seeing the "light bulb" go off when a student truly understands a lesson. It is very rewarding. I am capable of helping in any math or science discipline up to and including high school.
I started an engineering undergraduate degree 8 years after finishing high school. I hadn't studied any math in the interim and was very worried about my ability to jump straight into a very math intensive academic program. So I understand how math can seem intimidating. I figured out ways to look at the problems and break them down so they can be understood. Having completed an engineering degree with honors and working for ten years as an engineer, I am very confident in my ability to help others with any mathematical subjects up to and including Calculus.
My general approach to tutoring in the past has been to have the student bring their past work in the subject to the first session. Then we go over what they are having problems with and whether it is a general issue or a problem with a specific concept. If it is the former, I then work through problems with them to see where they are having issues. If it is a specific concept, I will try to show them different ways of looking at the topic until we find one that works.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
