About Andy

I am a software developer that knows how difficult and frustrating it can be learning totally new concepts. I didn't grow up knowing that I was going to be a programmer, so I can really empathize with and understand how metaphors and different approaches to various personalities/backgrounds can have tremendous success. I have worked as a sole/lead developer on a variety of projects for various clients, including:

+GE Aviation -- 2D and 3D image processing applications and tools written in C, C++, IDL, Java, Javascript, jQuery
+Luxottica -- desktop application used in over 1,000 Lenscrafters locations using JavaScript, jQuery, CSS, HTML, XML
+Gannett -- large scale media application using Objective-C, node.js, PHP
+Personal iOS applications in Objective-C and Swift
+Kinetic Vision -- Virtual Reality (VR) application for Oculus Rift in C# (current role)

I also have a background in sports. I played baseball in high school and was a Division 1 First-Team All State selection while at St. Xavier. Being a student of my own in having received instruction and coaching from all sorts of people, I have a great understanding of how important it is to adjust teaching strategies to each individual. I also have a great appreciation for how big of an impact the help and guidance of an individual can have on another.

I can help you with Algorithms, General CS Concepts, C, C++, C#, CSS3, HTML, IDL, Java, Javascript, jQuery, Node.js, Objective-C, PHP, Qt, Swift, TCL, VB, VBS, and XML.

I am open to all backgrounds, personalities, and schedules. I'm eager to help out those who really want to learn but may be having trouble as a result of previous cookie cutter, textbook teaching strategies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I graduated from Columbia University in 2012 with a double major Computer Science and Economics. I have been a professional software developer for about four years now. I worked with GE Aviation for 2.5 years which involved heavy CS usage with complicated algorithms involving 2D and 3D image processing and a major stress on efficiency in hardware and software. All of the meaty, intensive processing was done with C++, comprising of about 70% of the work that I did for GE. I also am strong in Objective-C, further adding some perspective to my understanding and use of the two.

Computer Programming

I graduated from Columbia University in 2012 with a double major Computer Science and Economics. I have been a professional software developer for over four years now, working as lead/sole developer on a variety of challenge projects for different clients.

JavaScript

I graduated from Columbia University in 2012 with a double major Computer Science and Economics. I have been a professional software developer for about four years now. I worked with GE Aviation for 2.5 years which involved heavy CS usage with complicated algorithms involving 2D and 3D image processing and a major stress on efficiency in hardware and software. I have a wide range of skills with a variety of languages and platforms.

With particular regard to Javascript, I have used it for every client and project in my professional career in a variety of applications. I have built a handful of custom group scheduling websites and an iOS app using Javascript in a combination of Javascript and jQuery on the frontend with Node.js on the backend. Javascript is one of my favorite languages in its syntax and major functionality.
