Xavier University (Sociology)
My name is Aline and I am a native American, born in Cincinnati, Ohio. I have been teaching ELS for 15 years. I taught for 2 years in Brazil, then continued in the U.S. at Berlitz, as well as ESL, which is a language school on university campuses. At ELS we prepared students for entry to universities for undergraduate or graduate classes. This school had 12 levels, so I am experienced with beginners as well as advanced levels. I taught classes in reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary, idioms and grammar. Many of my students were Chinese and Saudi Arabians as well as other nationalities. At Berlitz a lot my students were business men as well as their families. I have CELTA certification and I speak French as well as Spanish. My schedule is flexible depending on student's availability.
I tend to develop a relationship with my students in order to understand what their needs are. If they need help with writing or speaking or grammar, that is what we will concentrate on. Some students need grammar practice or how to feel confident speaking English in a meeting. Each student has different needs, so I would analyze what the students wants to achieve and work on achieving those goals. I have had students who wanted to feel confident going to the bank or supermarket alone; so we would go out together and test their ability to "survive" in the real world. Another area is to be able to answer or make calls on the phone. I also include the individual's culture during classes because it's important for the student to be motivated to reveal information about the country he or she is from.
I encourage you to feel free to contact me and I will adapt classes to your needs, whether you are a beginner or an advanced student. If you are an employee who is new to the U.S., very often learning idioms will help you communicate with your American co-workers. I have taught people of all ages, it's never to late to learn English. I have lived in other countries and know how difficult it can be, living far from home and having problems with communication. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
