Art Academy of Cincinnati (BFA in Painting)
Cranbrook Academy of Art (Master's)
I earned my BFA in Painting from the Art Academy of Cincinnati and my MFA focusing in Sculpture from the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. I currently work in Admissions for the Art Academy of Cincinnati where I help students navigate the application process.
Prior to working in college admissions, I taught Fundamentals of Drawing and Figure Drawing and Painting for Cranbrook Summer Art Institute. In those classes I helped my students build and expand on their portfolios to get into some of the most notable undergraduate art programs in the United States (Pratt, Cooper Union, and School of the Museum of Fine Arts to name a few). I also taught art and science to K-12 students for 3 years and co-directed summer teacher workshops for Cranbrook Art and Science on the Go.
For students looking at applying to visual art and design colleges they have an application process that is very different than other fields. I've been on both sides of that process. I've been the Educator working with students to build portfolios and have written numerous letters of recommendation but I've also been the Admissions Counselor reviewing portfolios and applicational materials. I use my experiences to help students build the strongest portfolio possible and truly feel prepared to submit materials. It's a long process that starts well before senior year of high school. I work one on one with students to set up a plan and obtainable goals to stay motivated. My goal is not only to teach art making skills and material but to help my students not feel overwhelmed by the weight of college preparation.
I believe that to be a good educator I need to practice what I teach, so I maintain an active studio practice. I love researching materials and art making processes which helps my students excel and reach their goals. In turn, all that research only adds to my studio practice. It's a wonderful symbiotic relationship between teacher and student! Some of my favorite subjects are portfolio prep, drawing (graphite, charcoal, conte, metal point, ink, etc.), painting (watercolor, acrylic, oil, and egg tempera), conceptual art theory (what is the meaning behind the work), and material studies (studying a range of traditional to hyper contemporary materials).
I hold myself to a high standard and ask for feedback from students, parents, and other educators. If you are not satisfied with my services I will do everything I can to meet and exceed your expectations.
I do my best to be flexible with lesson times and rescheduling but I do ask that students give 24 hours notice for cancellation. I do offer makeup lessons for emergencies and illness.
I look forward to hearing from you soon! I currently work as a Senior Admissions Officer for The Art Academy of Cincinnati. I was promoted to this position from being an excellent Admissions Counselor. My main duties are to review portfolios and admissions materials to decided if a student is accepted or not. I also am on the committee for deciding scholarships based off merit.
