About Marilyn

I have taught ESOL for over 5 years in Cincinnati, first in the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, with predominantly, but not exclusive French-speaking West African Adult students (Russians and Koreans included!), then in a private French-speaking African (adult) community, and recently with a family of visitors (aged 46, 12, 10) from France who are originally from Senegal. In Manhattan (NYC), I taught ESOL to youth of various ages: 6 -18, mostly Latino. I began my interest in teaching ESOL in 2nd grade when a boy from San Salvador arrived to spend a semester with us. My interest and participation blossomed with assisting my college roommate - Taiwanese via Vietnam - master English pronunciation and comprehension.

I am outgoing and personable and Specialize in teaching Practical, Conversational English.
I like to work with what's most relevant - expanding vocabulary that can be immediately applied to the workplace and daily living.
I work well with all ages.
I have been a Children's And All Age Public Librarian in an Urban Setting for over 25 years. This includes both NYC, and Cincinnati, plus a year in rural upstate NY. I have worked in community centers and lived in areas of diverse populations.

My concentrations for my undergraduate (Bowling Green State University) Liberal Studies B.A. were: Black Studies, Women's Studies and The Family. My library of 20 years in Cincinnati was a Black (American and African) lower income urban community.

I love working with newcomers to America, and those who have been here for awhile, but would like to continue polishing their skills in understanding and communicating in English. I have not found it necessary for me to know how to speak my student's language, in order for to successfully teach my native language.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
