About Zoe

It was my third grade teacher at Fairview German School, Mrs. Kreimer, who sparked my love of learning and school. She read to us daily, encouraged creativity and curiosity through hands-on projects while also providing a safe and nurturing environment. This caring environment coupled with the importance of community instilled in me during my childhood played a big role in my aspirations to become a teacher.

I just recently returned back home to Cincinnati after nine years of teaching in New York City. The past six years I have taught at the School at Columbia University. In my nine years of teaching, I've taught a range of grades from Kindergarten to fourth grade.

Throughout my years at the School at Columbia University, I have had the opportunity to be involved in collaborative curriculum planning and assessment, to design units of study in all homeroom subject areas, most recently including an integrated Literacy, Social Studies, and the Arts unit on the Harlem Renaissance. When outlining the arch of this unit, I sought to strike a balance between helping the students acquire informational reading and writing skills while also providing them with an outlet for their budding creativity. By doing research on a Google Site I created on the Harlem Renaissance, students studied various landmarks, musicians, writers, and artists from this time period. Then, they began writing and creating comics through Comic Life to visually represent various important self-selected aspects of the Harlem Renaissance. I find this approach to be successful as it reinforces the materials while allowing students to learn by doing.

I am thrilled to be back in Cincinnati and equally excited to be a tutor. I find that one on one time with students is what helps to move them forward.

I am passionate about reading. I read constantly and I love finding new books for students to read. In addition to having my Masters in Elementary Education, I have attended numerous workshops at Teachers College in NYC about reading. I've taken several online webinars about reading, am apart of many innovative teaching reading groups.

I've taught Elementary Education for nine years. I have several letters of recommendations available upon request.

I'm certified in Orton Gillingham and have been using it in small groups in my classroom for several years

I hope my application has given you a snapshot of who I am as a teacher. Please feel free to contact me to if you have any questions or if you'd like to schedule a session.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Phonics

I'm certified in Orton Gillingham and have used it with small groups in my classroom for the past five years. I have experience creating individual spelling programs. My main method of teaching phonics is to give students strategies and tools they can use independently as they are writing.

Reading

I have Orten Gillingham training and 9 years experience teaching reading

Study Skills

I've worked closely to help students and parents manage study skills. On back to school night each year I offer families several concrete homework managing and study strategies. I also give them a study skills and homework FAQ at the start of the school year. For students that struggle with study skills I've helped create student driven progress charts to help them retain and manage their study skills growth.
