About Michelle

I retired in 2012 after teaching for 32 years for Cincinnati Public Schools. I served as Lead Teacher my last year of teaching. My strong desire to see students succeed lead me to work primarily with at risk students. I have very high expectations for my students but realize that students respond well in a nurturing, consistent environment. I have taught all of the core subjects but my strongest skills are in Reading/ Language Arts.

I was retired for 3 months when I was recruited as a fluency tutor for an Educational Service Center. I am a certified TESOL teacher. I have taught fluency for 3 years to k-4 students in a public school setting. I work with students from China, Africa, Mexico, Nepal and Guatemala.

I have taken the necessary classes to certify me in the SIOP method of teaching. The training provides me with guidelines and strategies for making content comprehensible for English learners.

Working with English Language Learners has given me the opportunity to step outside of the curriculum and differentiate instruction. I am able to work on auditory and written components of phonics

Spelling has many rules that must be learned and applied in order to become a successful speller. Teaching these rules in conjunction with a strong phonetic base helps ensure student success.

Open communication is the foundation of a successful tutor/parent/student relationship. I encourage frequent dialogue to keep miscommunication at a minimum. Success, for a student, comes from understanding, listening, accommodating and adapting. This can only be achieved through communication.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am TESOL certified and have held the position of ESL Language Support for 3 years. I work with students from Nepal, China, Saudi Arabia, Guatemala, Africa and Mexico. I support their in class studies and provide support with small group pull-out intervention.

Phonics

I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education.
I taught Phonics for 32 years in a Cincinnati Public School.
I currently teach phonics daily in an ESL program.

Reading

I have a Bachelor of Science (k-8) in Elementary Education. I taught reading daily for 32 years before switching to the position of ESL Language Support. The position I now hold includes teaching reading but has target goals for language proficiency.

Spelling

I have a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. I taught Spelling daily as part of the Reading curriculum for 32 years. Reading success is achieved, in part, by being a successful speller. I have successfully provided students with the rules and skills needed to become successful spellers.

Vocabulary

Linguistics and vocabulary training was part of my course work for the TESOL endorsement. I teach vocabulary daily as part of my job as an English Language Support Specialist.
