About Ndaya

I grew up in South America where I graduated from an international high school in 2007 after which, I went on to attend Knox College where I earned my Bachelor's of Arts and majored in English Literature, and Educational Studies, Secondary. I am a Congolese American, and having had the opportunity to grow up abroad, become accustomed to another culture, and learn a second language fluently (Spanish), it allowed me to learn and experience a myriad of things. I possess the certification, skills, and experience to fulfill the duties required of a excellent tutor.

I believe that learning should be a fun, uplifting, confidence-producing experience, so I like to take a global approach to tutoring. the first thing I do is I sit down with my client and determine what skills they have already mastered, what skills they would like to master, and how they learn best (auditory, visual, kinesthetically, etc.). Once the aforementioned has been completed, we then begin working on a personalized "curriculum" that combines the client's learning style with items they have already mastered to help each client find success as they move forward in our tutoring sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I have worked with a cooperate work study program for a year. During that time, I met with students and helped them find jobs that related to their career goals. I assisted in filling out W-2 paperwork and I gave students strategies on how to be successful at work.

College Counseling

I believe that selecting a college is not only on of the most exciting times in a young person's life, but it is also one of the most stressful. I think that college is a discussion that should begin the summer before a student's 9th grade year, so that students have a clear idea of what each school is looking for prior to even beginning those last 4 years of schools. I subscribe to the belief that while a 4-year college may not be the route for everyone, it is important that every person seriously consider the pros and cons of pursuing a post-secondary degree.

I have had the opportunity to work with the TRIO Program (a government funded program that helps first-generation college students make it to and then through college), as well as work along side different college counselors (both here and abroad) on everything in every aspect of the process: selecting the schools to apply to, writing the essays, setting-up campus visits and over nights, applying for scholarships, filling out the FAFSA, and making the final decision. In my approach to college counseling I do my best to make sure that the client has a clear vision of what they want out of a college, while also being realistic in the choice of schools they apply to.

Due to the fact that I have lived and visited multiple places in the world, I have cooked, learned to cook, and tasted a number of different cuisines.

Microsoft Outlook

Aside from the fact that I use Outlook on a daily basis, I have created and lead training seminars on Outlook.

Public Speaking

While speech may seem like one of the easiest subjects to master once you get nerves under control, it should not be regarded as a purely a subject. Being a good speaker not only has the ability to improve someone's vocabulary and annunciation, it can also help them make logical sound arguments and think quickly on their feet.

As a certified teacher, I have had a lot of experience in the realm of public speaking in front of students, parents, administrators, etc. and I have also taught public speaking to students. My approach is to begin with the message they want to convey, pick the words, and then talk about the most effective way to deliver it.

Apart from having grown-up in a Spanish speaking country, I have been a TA for Spanish classes and tutored Spanish for the past eight years as a certified tutor. I have done everything from teach pronunciation, and basic conversational Spanish, to teaching verb conjugation, vocabulary, writing, and reading. I have also translated from English-Spanish an Spanish-English in both causal and professional settings, as well as translated, edited, and proof-read Spanish papers and documents.

Aside from the fact that I played volleyball in high school, it is a sport that I am extremely passionate about and continue to play when I have the time.
