Even though I teach Science at the college level, I always enjoy one on one interactions with high school or college level students, where I can help that person achieve the goals and successes they desire. Most people just lack the confidence, and I so enjoy watching them gain confidence and achieve what they want to.

I have a broad education with a degree in Chemistry, minor in Math, and a PhD in Biology, so I think this can help me integrate subjects for the student to both engage their interest and find a starting point of strength for them. Students generally comment they find my explanations very clear, with many real life examples, that really helps them to understand the important concepts. I actually work hard at this, to make sure to explain the subject several different ways so that the student can grasp the material well.

One of my main objectives as well is to increase the "academic muscle" of any student I help, so that they are more confident in their own abilities as they move forward, and can make real progress toward their goals.

Study Skills

I teach open access college freshman, no entrance requirements. I see students come in ill prepared to do college work, and have worked very hard to help them acquire the skills that will help them succeed in any career path they choose, so I have some idea of where they need to be as college freshman. I regularly transform freshman A&P students into nursing students (one of whom just informed me she is making an A in nursing school!) The secret ingredients are old-fashioned reading and essay writing skills, especially for this generation of student. They must train to increase their working memory, to begin to understand mastery of subject (rather than factoid memorization). I feel I could adapt my methods very easily to any age group by using the appropriate level study materials. Who better to prepare students for college, than a teacher who sees what is lacking in students and has demonstrated successes in helping them build study skills that will allow them to be successful in any career path?

Wonderfully patient and very knowledgeable tutor

Kathy has been a wonderful tutor for my son. She has tutored him last year for his college biology course and is tutoring him this year for his anatomy and physiology course. She if very knowledgeable and can break down material into easily understandable parts. She has been flexible in adjusting her times to fit my son's hectic college schedule. I highly recommend her for any high school or college biology or anatomy tutoring

Very Patient

Thanks Ms.Kathleen, I appreciate you taking the time to help me. While the content was likely different from what she has seen initially she adapted and was able to help me just the right amount. I look forward to our next session.

Wonderful Tutor

Kathy is an amazing tutor and person to work with. She made some of the hardest and most difficult medical biochemistry and physiology topics much easier to understand. What I love about her as a tutor is she is able to meet you at the level of knowledge you are at and help break down the difficult material to a level you can better understand and together go from there. I really enjoy our time together and it goes by fast in a way that I look forward to our sessions even knowing I am going through some really hard topics. She has helped me tremendously in medical school as I navigated my first year and I look forward to working with her throughout the rest of my years as a medical student.

Very Sweet & Great Tutor

Dr. Kathy helped me better understand what happens during skeletal muscle contractions, cardiac cycle, and better understanding the levels of organization. I really appreciated her humor and her helping me to better grasp the simple concepts by giving real life examples. After our session, I am feeling more confident in my ability to better walk through the material and understand it on my own. I’m looking forward to getting more help in the future. I don’t feel like I’m drowning in material anymore and that I can actually swim now. I would recommend Dr. Kathy to anyone I know who needs physiology help.

Great teacher and person!

My son has been taking biology lessons with Kathy for almost a year and always thought that Biology is a particularly difficult topic for him. Well, I have to tell you, he just got a 93% on his final test. Not only Kathy is knowledgeable and articulate in her subject, but she was also able to understand my son’s abilities and difficult personality and build a great relationship with him. Kathy is truly a pleasure to work with. Thank you very much, Kathy!
