Even though I teach Science at the college level, I always enjoy one on one interactions with high school or college level students, where I can help that person achieve the goals and successes they desire. Most people just lack the confidence, and I so enjoy watching them gain confidence and achieve what they want to.

I have a broad education with a degree in Chemistry, minor in Math, and a PhD in Biology, so I think this can help me integrate subjects for the student to both engage their interest and find a starting point of strength for them. Students generally comment they find my explanations very clear, with many real life examples, that really helps them to understand the important concepts. I actually work hard at this, to make sure to explain the subject several different ways so that the student can grasp the material well.

One of my main objectives as well is to increase the "academic muscle" of any student I help, so that they are more confident in their own abilities as they move forward, and can make real progress toward their goals.

Study Skills

I teach open access college freshman, no entrance requirements. I see students come in ill prepared to do college work, and have worked very hard to help them acquire the skills that will help them succeed in any career path they choose, so I have some idea of where they need to be as college freshman. I regularly transform freshman A&P students into nursing students (one of whom just informed me she is making an A in nursing school!) The secret ingredients are old-fashioned reading and essay writing skills, especially for this generation of student. They must train to increase their working memory, to begin to understand mastery of subject (rather than factoid memorization). I feel I could adapt my methods very easily to any age group by using the appropriate level study materials. Who better to prepare students for college, than a teacher who sees what is lacking in students and has demonstrated successes in helping them build study skills that will allow them to be successful in any career path?

Great!

Kathleen has taught me so much. She teaches in a way to remember and uses every day situations and scenarios to understand the material. May only complaint is that I didn’t find her sooner.

Patient, knowledgeable and very friendly!

Kathleen is great. This is my first time actually having a personal tutor. As person whose English is not my primary language, also I am taking hard courses and the intensity of these courses literally double for me. Kathleen, she is always tries to keep our communication as simple as possible which really helps me in my study process. Also, she also goes back and forth between her own lessons and my PowerPoint slides to make as many connections to my courses as possible. So far so good for me, and I probably try to having Kathleen as my personal tutor for next semester.

Encouraging and knowledgeable tutor.

Kathleen is well-versed with biology and biochemistry knowledge that she easily conveys to her students. I am preparing for the MCAT and she has been a tremendous help in the BB section, especially in explaining the difficult experiments found in MCAT passages. Her level of expertise goes beyond premed level as she often shares materials that are taught at medical school level. Kathleen is very patient, and she is always encouraging me with positive affirmations. I am very glad to receive her help as I prep for the MCAT.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Kathleen is currently tutoring me in A&P I. We have had a couple of sessions, mapped out a plan of action. I love her approach and ties the material to realistic life events which aids in retaining the information. She takes the time to review the material you're using in your course to help aid you in doing well. I am excited about learning. I will post another review once I start getting test scores. I am very pleased with Kathleen. Thank you Kathleen, with your assistance I am confident I will do very well in my class and my career 😀

Kathleen is great! She is knowledgeable and cares about her students.

We learned PGY 452: Physiology, endocrinology. Specifically, we went over the regulation of steroid and protein hormone synthesis. For proteins, the main synthesis step in which regulation occurs is vesicle release. For steroids, multiple compounds are involved such as cytochrome P-450, STAR, and a synthase. The transcription and translation steps are slow, but release is generally fast. Hormone levels in the blood are regulated in an oscillatory fashion, which Kathleen has a particular interest in. Great 40 minute session, super productive!

Patient, thorough and Knowledgeable!

Kathy was really knowledgeable and helped immensely with my assignment for Biology. We covered many topics and Kathy took the time to go over the concepts.

Speechless

In my experience, Kathleen is the most excellent tutor and I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone struggling in any scientific field, at any age for that matter. She is a rockstar genius, and can find a way to help you remember the most important information, by relating to real world functions. I am currently finishing my BA in biochem, and Kathleen has had my back the whole way here. Thank you Kathleen!

Absolutely Fabulous!

Excellent teacher, very clear, kind, and patient! Kathleen really helped me feel prepared and confident in the material and she was wonderful to talk to throughout the session! I look forward to working with her again!

Kathleen knows her stuff

Kathleen taught me plenty of useful things about Ecology that is going to be on my next test. She also connected it with life to make it easier to follow along. I look forward to learning more about Biology and raising my grade in the process!
