About Susan

I tutor one student at a time for 60 minutes at the rate of:

Math and Physics: $50/hr;
Computer Science: $55/hr

I have been tutoring my classmates in math since the 2nd grade! I have tutored math for grade school, high school, college, and beyond, through the present, for over 20 years. I also tutor computer science, as I have been a professional Software Engineer/Computer Programmer for over 20 years.

I have also tutored some calculus, physics, and chemistry while in college, since I had to take these courses as part of my Electrical Engineering degree that I received from the University of Cincinnati.

I have also participated in the Whiz Kids Reading Program for 3 years through my church. I have also tutored downtown, for both reading and math, as needed, helping adults prepare for the GED.

I am currently pursuing my Masters in Education.

I enjoy the 1:1 interaction with students, when the "I got it" light bulb goes off and the grades start going up. Then their confidence goes up, as well, and that confidence then transfers over to other areas of their life, as well.

My methods include: teaching a topic or lesson and then quizzing the student thereafter; verbal and written practice of spelling words, math facts, formulas, word problem key words, and other rote memorization; practice SAT/ACT problems or test (particularly in the math and science arenas).

Sessions must be scheduled at least 1 day in advance, with some detail on what the student needs help with, wants tutoring on, etc, so that I can bring specific materials needed for the session.

Cancellations need to be made with 24 hours - please see my cancellation policy for further details. I do charge for a full session for any cancellations made 0-24 hours prior to the session.

I tutor in person at one of the Public Libraries in the Cincinnati area, north of the river. Preferred libraries include: Blue Ash, Fairfield, Winton Woods, Wyoming, or the Main Library in downtown Cincinnati. I am also open to tutoring in other local libraries in the Cincinnati area.

Additionally, I tutor at the University of Cincinnati (main campus or Raymond Walters), as well as online via the Wyzant site.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

C++

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati, and completed the first year of Masters Degree coursework in Computer Science.

I am currently a professional Software Engineer/Computer Programmer and have been for many years, so I have used or and currently fluent in software development (procedural, object-oriented, and scripting) as well as C, Visual C++, C++, Java, JavaScript, HTML, JSP,and other languages.

Specific to C++, I have 6 years experience at AT&T Bell Labs coding Visual C++ code using Visual Studio, as well as a more recent academic quarter coding games using C++ in my Gaming and Simulation Programming degree 6 quarters of completed coursework.

Computer Engineering

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati. The first 4/5 years of the degree were the same for both the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering majors, and, I took many of the Computer Engineering courses in my senior year, as well. I remember circuits, Assembler for the Intel CPU, and would enjoy helping a student be successful in this coursework. I am currently a Software Engineer/Computer Programmer and have been for many years.

Computer Programming

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati, and completed the first year of Masters Degree coursework in Computer Science. I am currently a Software Engineer/Computer Programmer and have been for many years, so I have used or and currently fluent in software development (procedural, object-oriented, and scripting) as well as C, C++, Java, JavaScript, HTML, JSP,and other languages.

Computer Science

I hold a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati (UC). The first 4/5 years of the degree were the same for both the Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering majors, and I took many of the Computer Engineering courses in my senior year, as well.

I have completed coursework for 3 quarters towards an MS in Computer Science at UC, 3 quarters towards a Webmaster Certificate, and 6 quarters towards a second BS in Gaming and Simulation programming degree.

I am currently a Software Engineer/Computer Programmer/Web Developer and have been for over 20+ years.

JavaScript

I am currently a Software Engineer and have been for over 25 years.

I have 3-5 years business experience in the HTML/CSS/JavaScript and Java technologies, and currently utilize these technologies on my day-to-day job.

When tutoring students in any programming language, I ask them to bring their laptop to the session (&/or I bring my own), and I teach them how to Google concepts, API docs for the language (like Javadocs for Java), programming and examples of code in the language.

I teach them programming design and logic by breaking down the exercise, talking it through and drawing out flowcharts, pseudocode, arrays and data structures with their indices, etc.

I also discuss class, module, and variable naming conventions (camelCase, consistency, descriptive as possible), as I coach them through learning the language syntax and debugging methods (echoing print statements, commenting out lines until it works and then uncommenting a few lines at a time until it breaks and repeating this process, etc.) and testing all logic paths in the code.

Python

I am currently a Software Engineer and have been for over 25 years.

I have 2 years business experience in the Python programming language; I have recently tutored a Jython/JES student for more than 10 hours over several sessions of hands on programming on the student's laptop, learning as they typed the code for their classwork and final.

When tutoring students in any programming language, I ask them to bring their laptop to the session (&/or I bring my own), and I teach them how to Google concepts, API docs for the language (like Javadocs for Java), programming tutorials and examples of code in the language.
