When you need an edge on your writing, you need someone who has sharp skills. I have been writing since childhood, and have found ways to use my writing talents in every job I've had. From writing skits and lyrics, to being a published poet, I mostly enjoy the creative process that writing opens up. I have also written regular articles for publication, and have often been called on for my proofreading skills.
Beginning in fourth grade, I was a top contender in school, district and state spelling bees. As a dedicated writer, my grammar skills are also well-honed. Now that I'm retired from the U.S.P.S., my dream of writing a fiction series is looming on the horizon. Having worked full-time since graduating from high school, not to mention raising a family, I never felt that I had time to pursue that particular quest until now.
It is my mission to help others learn to write well. We all have thoughts and feelings inside of us, that can be expressed much more clearly through the written word than we could ever express in spoken words. So many things can be conveyed in a way that does not insult or inflame, if only you have the right tools...which may be as simple as a pen and paper. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I discovered many years ago, that proofreading is one of my favorite things to do. Errors in spelling, grammar and punctuation seem to jump off the page at me. I often circle the errors in books as I read them, and have sent a few of the worst back to the publisher. I'm always surprised that those errors make it to print without someone catching and correcting them.
I began reading at the age of 5, and was asked to read stories to my kindergarten class. In first grade, I was reading at two years above grade level, even before anyone else in my class could read. From fourth grade to eighth grade, I was called on to tutor other students in reading and remedial reading.
It has been a life-long passion of mine. I think everyone should have the joy of experiencing the world open up to them through books, and I love the spark in a student's eye when they first realize the excitement of that happening for them.
