I have been tutoring for over ten years now. My wife and I recently moved from Boston to Cincinnati for her work. In Boston, I worked at a literary magazine as an editor and production manager, and also taught composition and literature at the Berklee School of Music. I love helping students become comfortable and skilled in using words, and hopefully to also enjoy the process of writing.
I have also worked as a one-on-one SAT tutor, and for several years was a GRE instructor for the Princeton Review.
As a tutor at several Boston-area colleges, I have helped students with everything from scholarly essays on architecture to song lyrics and short stories. I also served as a volunteer tutor at our local library helping people improve their English skills. It is very satisfying to get to know someone while watching their ability to communicate and express themselves grow.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Master's in Writing from Emerson College, and currently work in the writing centers of both the Boston Architectural College and the Berklee College of Music, primarily tutoring students who speak English as a second language. I also volunteer weekly at my local library as a conversation partner for people learning English, and have worked with students from Haiti to Tibet. I am comfortable with French and am also in the process of learning Spanish. All of this experience has given me a good feeling for some of the difficulties that English can present as a language, and some of the best ways to help students overcome them.
