About Jim

My method for tutoring begins with you, the learner. What do you need? What are your goals?

I begin by finding out about you, where you are now, and where you want to go. Next, we will identify your strengths and we will build on them. I’ll help identify any obstacles on your learning course and then help you overcome them. I’ll recognize where you have some insufficiency and we’ll work on mastering those areas. We will find opportunities for you to learn and grow. If you don’t know your goals and you feel lost, that’s OK. I can help you discover those goals and clear the path.

My personal method is very interactive and non-traditional. Traditional education is usually seen as one-size-fits-all. I am convinced that true learning isn’t that way. All of us have different, individualized ways to learn. My method is different: I’ll customize your plan and try to fit your style. You will learn to study more effectively. My experience has taught me that many learners need more opportunities to practice and to learn by doing (not just theory). We can take advantage of modern technology to make English easier.

My diverse experience will help you. I am very patient as I’ve been teaching English as a Second Language since 2007. I’ve coached, tutored, and trained hundreds of students one-on-one. I’ve improved students’ essential English communication skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I teach grammar and vocabulary every day. My students and I work together to reduce accent and improve pronunciation. My clients are doctors, lawyers, executives, managers, professionals, scientists, and engineers. I prepare my clients for important presentations, meetings, and conferences. I also successfully prepare teenagers and young adults for the TOEFL, SAT, and ACT. My clients come from more than 20 countries.

In addition to ESL, I’ve tutored high school students in English and social science. I was a teaching assistant at Northern Kentucky University, where I helped instruct literature and honors courses. So I can help you, too.

My experience is also real world. Writing is my specialization. I’ve worked as a freelance writer and editor for over seven years. For Procter and Gamble, I wrote recruiting and website copy in the Human Resources department. When co-workers were unsure about their writing, I was the department go-to guy for answers. In addition, I copy-edited books for F+W Media. Unlike many teachers who have never left the school environment, I know what it takes to communicate successfully in the corporate world.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I’ve improved students’ essential English communication skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I teach grammar and vocabulary every day. My students and I work together to reduce accent and improve pronunciation. My clients have been teenagers to seniors. I’ve taught doctors, lawyers, executives, managers, scientists, and engineers. I’ve prepared many college students to take the TOEFL, SAT, and ACT. In addition to ESL, I’ve tutored high school students in English Literature and social science. This certifies me to help you.

My experience is also real world. Writing and composition are my specializations. I’ve worked as a freelance writer and editor for over five years. For Procter & Gamble, I wrote recruiting and departmental copy in Human Resources. When co-workers were unsure about their writing, I was the department go-to guy. In addition, I copy-edited writing instructional books as a freelancer for F+W Media. ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) since 2007. I’ve tutored, trained, and coached hundreds of students one-on-one. I’ve improved students’ essential English communication skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I teach grammar and vocabulary every day. My students and I work together to reduce accent and improve pronunciation. My clients have been teenagers to seniors. I’ve taught doctors, lawyers, executives, managers, scientists, accountants, and engineers. I’ve prepared many college students to take the TOEFL.

We'll use conversation as the basis for teaching English. We might practice with short compositions and grammar exercises for focus. We record conversations, practice dialogues, and pronunciation drills. We use DVDs and the Internet for listening practice.
