About Bethany

I am an experienced tutor. I have tutored junior high, high school, college and graduate level students in Biology, Chemistry, Algebra I and II, Physics, and Writing. I earned a Master of Education in Life Sciences from Xavier University, a Master of Science in Natural Resources from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Xavier University.

I enjoy tutoring and am willing to work with my students until they understand the material. I explain the material in several different ways, using analogies, drawing on the students prior knowledge, and providing examples and different scenarios when necessary. I have a lot of patience, and I enjoy teaching. I have always done well in school and am very well-rounded in my education, so I am able to teach/tutor on a variety of subjects. I look forward to helping you improve your understanding and your grades!

I am also an experienced writing tutor. I will help you prepare outlines to guide your paper, proofread and edit to polish your paper and provide feedback to improve your paper. I am a professional writer and have been published by Tilian FDC, and Michigan DNR. My aim is to help you improve your writing skills and turn in a more polished, well-written paper.

Hi Kelli,

Thank you so much for your feedback! I am so happy that I have had such a positive impact on your daughter's coursework, class grade, and self-esteem. I, too, know what it's like to struggle in a class. It's a miserable feeling.

I also want to let you know that your daughter has been working very hard and she earned and deserves her higher grades. I am proud of the progress she's made and I'm sure you and your husband are as well.

I look forward to our next tutoring session today at 3pm.

Have a great day!

Bethany

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have several years experience teaching written and spoken English to people who do not have English as their first language. I am patient and respectful with my students as they grasp new English sounds and words. I think the best way for someone to learn English is to speak it in a conversation. I ask my students simple questions and help them to answer. As the student progresses, we delve into more complicated aspects of the English language like figures of speech, slang, common sayings. I am open to my student's input and feedback on what is important for them to learn. I think it is very important to stay positive and upbeat as a tutor. I know that mistakes are a necessary part of learning a language. It is through learning from these mistakes that the student will grasp a better fluency of the English language.

Genetics

I have several years of experience with genetics both as a student and as a professional genetics researcher. I completed Genetics and Genetics Lab at Xavier University. I know all the basic genetic material required for a college or high school course in genetics including the structure and building blocks of DNA, the mechanisms of meiosis, and how chromosomes are structured and inherited. I have studied the different types of mutations that occur in chromosomes. I fully understand the different ways in which chromosomes are inherited, the dominant vs. recessive alleles, X-linked genes, and polymorphism. I am able to teach these complex genetic concepts in a simplified manner that even someone with no prior knowledge can come to understand how genetics works.

I have also worked in a genetics laboratory extracting DNA and studying the role of DNA proteins in human cells, so I have advanced knowledge in the area of genetics as well.

Study Skills

I have a Master of Education in Life Sciences, a Master of Science in Natural Resources and Environment and a Bachelor of Science in Biology. I enjoy teaching my students how to organize and prioritize their school work. I believe that an up-to-date, organized plan book is a key to success. Many times students I work with will not know where or how to start. I like to show my students how to break down their work into manageable chunks. I've also found that a quiet workplace with no clutter helps my students focus on their tasks. I know I have succeeded when my students start to utilize these new study skills on their own and improve their grades!

Tennis

I have played tennis for 28 years. I took private tennis lessons every week for 14 years. In high school I played Junior Varsity for my freshman year and then I played Varsity tennis for my sophomore, junior and senior years. I was the only sophomore who made the Varsity tennis team that year. In my junior and senior year I played #1 singles and #1 doubles. I made it to regionals in the state tournament. I was voted Most Valuable Player my senior year.

After high school, I taught tennis for 3 years for an outdoor spring/summer tennis program and an indoor fall/winter tennis program. I managed the Junior team of players ages 8 through 17. I taught group and private lessons for children and adults. I am proficient in all aspects of the tennis game, including swing and serving mechanics, different types of shots including topspin and slice, deciding when to hit down-the-line, cross court, drop shot or lob, and many different useful strategies of the game including serve and volley, moving your opponent around the court, waiting for unforced errors and an array of doubles strategies including moving together, switching sides from ad to deuce when necessary and communicating with your partner to play on your opponent's weaknesses.

I also have some practice rackets that my students can use to learn with until they decide to commit and buy a racket.
