I have more than 20 years of English teaching experience as a college professor; for more than 5 years I graded (scored) the written portion of the GRE, the people who also write the ACT. My area of specialization is with people who need help with their writing skills; I am certified in the GED, SAT, ACT, GRE, and GMAT test preparation (please note, however, that with the GRE and GMAT I work only with the writing or verbal sections). My successes include raising one student's ACT score from a 26 to a 35 overall, and one person's English score from a 17 to a 32. I particularly like test preparation because it gives me a chance to see tangible results from the time spent with the student.
Once your student is through the ACT, we can work together on college essays and applications. It's a long, arduous process in which I have a great deal of experience. With your student's ACT score ready to submit for college applications, we will work with his/her college application essays so that he/she can get ranked and admitted to the highest possible selections. In working with one student, he was admitted to 5 colleges; 4 were offers of full scholarships. (Yes, 4!) Simultaneously, we will work on scholarship applications so that your student can be eligible for any free money available! To date, my students have received over $310,000.00 in scholarship monies; I have had students turn down almost $750,000.00. One student in particular was accepted for one of twenty fellowship opportunities which included full tuition, books, room and board, and beginning his sophomore year a monthly stipend of $200.00. I am continually amazed at the opportunities "my students" have been offered.

After the first lesson with my daughter she came home eager to learn more. Specifically studying for the English, Reading, and Writing portion of the ACT, Darlene knew exactly what types of questions she needed to work on, retested her in the moment, and gave her essential fixes and tips for the reasons that she got each of them wrong. She identified her weaknesses to work on for the next lesson. My daughter came home ready to learn more!
Darlene is great. She and my son really seem to click. She's given him some great tips that should help him with note taking and studying. He seemed very receptive to her ideas and we're hoping it will improve his test scores.
My son started tutoring with Darlene in preparation for his ACT. He was looking to improve his writing score. We just received his new test scores and we are pleased and proud that Darlene helped him improve by 2 points! I can't say enough good things about Darlene. She's absolutely wonderful!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been preparing students for the ACT for some time now. I can usually raise their scores by a significant number of points. If they are prepared to study with me, they will learn some of the ins and outs of the test.
We can work on any aspect of English, whether it be test prep, writing an essay, or understanding the readings, I'm here to help.
Helping with writing is my specialty. I can teach you the "quick capture" method so that those ideas don't flee from your thoughts. Writing a 5 paragraph is as simple as following the directions on a recipe. Let me show you how.
