Bio

Hi, I'm Haakon! I'm a fourth-year medical student in Cincinnati, where I am in the top quartile in my class. I have achieved outstanding scores on my standardized exams including 97th percentile on Step 1 (263), 96th percentile on Step 2 CK (270), and 100th percentile on the MCAT (525). I have honored in most of my third-year clerkships and was also a high-performing student in the preclinical years.

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the Honors Program of Liberty University, where I completed my degree in Biomedical Sciences with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. I was involved in microbiology research for which I wrote my senior honors thesis. I was a National Merit Scholar in high school and earned a full-ride scholarship for undergrad.

I was a teaching assistant for 3 years in college (general and cell biology) and a 1-on-1 tutor for 3 semesters (general biology and genetics). I am passionate about teaching. For me, tutoring is exciting because I get to see my students' eyes light up when they "get" a difficult concept or master a topic!

I love learning about the science of the human body, from biochemistry and genetics to anatomy and physiology. Integrating concepts from different areas of science and medicine is a key way that I make sense of them. I can break down complex topics and explain them in bite-size ways. I will guide you through challenging areas and help you to master them.

Having worked hard to achieve excellent scores on my board exams, I know that the tests are high-stakes and difficult. I will work with you to develop your test-taking strategies, rapidly identify the key elements of a question stem, and narrow down the answer choices. I would also love to develop a game plan with you to tackle the weeks to months that you have remaining before the big test day arrives.

If you think we might be a good match, please reach out to me! I'd love to schedule a first session with you, and you can see how it goes. I am available both online and in-person in the Cincinnati area.

I love genetics! I have taken undergraduate and MD-level courses in genetics, and I have three semesters of experience in tutoring genetics. I also utilized genetics in my undergraduate research project and have performed DNA extraction, PCR, and bioinformatics techniques on microbiologic specimens.

Test Preparation

MCAT,

MCAT

I successfully passed the MCAT in 2018 with a top score of 525 (100th percentile). I worked hard and maintained a 4.0 GPA in undergraduate courses in the major content areas, including general biology, general and organic chemistry, biochemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, and psychology. I heavily used some key resources to review and master all the content. I am comfortable tutoring in all subject areas, assisting with crafting a study plan, and honing test-taking strategies.
USMLE

USMLE

I passed the Step 1 exam in June 2021 with a score of 263 (97th percentile) and the Step 2 exam in October 2022 with a score of 270 (96th percentile). I worked very hard and was somewhat of a minimalist when it came to study resources. I am a current fourth-year med student and am happy to tutor in all subject areas of the exams.
