About Kendra

I love Language Arts...I'm kind of a nerd that way.

More importantly, though, I care if students love Language Arts too; that's my passion.
I want everyone to like to write, read, and create as much as I do.

Hi. My name is Kendra and I have almost two decades of writing experience, am a champion speech writer and public speaker, former journalist, and certified Language Arts Teacher.

I have a B.A. in English from Georgetown College and I almost have a Masters of Education from Ohio University. My teacher certification is in Integrated Language Arts, 7-12.

I taught ninth grade language arts for two years and was affected by teacher lay offs last year. I have substituted all ages.

I truly believe that every student learns, just not in the same way or at the same pace; that's why differentiating instruction is so vital. There is no one size fits all to how I teach. It's not possible.

I look forward to helping you love language arts. And if I can't do that, I'll at least help you get good at it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Grammar

I am very qualified to teach grammar. I have several years of technical writing experience, which requires a high level of grammar, mechanics, and conventions knowledge, and I have a keen eye for detail. I make sure that all of my documents have my seal of approval before release.

Public Speaking

I am the Ohio state FFA prepared public speaking champion, Tri-State public speaking champion (Ohio, Pennsylvania, NY) and the Eastern Region runner up (1991).

That may seem like a long time ago, but it was my senior year in high school; I wrote the speech and presented it and it was the beginning of a career that has been filled with opportunities to improve my speaking abilities.

I am proud of my accomplishments and my ability to instill confidence in my students that otherwise are timid about getting in front of their peers.

Writing

I am a former journalist, high school English teacher, and technical writer. These are reasons why I am a qualified writing tutor.

As a journalist, I gathered information from subjects (people) I interviewed and transformed notes into the rough draft of a story, and then a final story, all under a tight deadline. These steps are very similar to the steps that are followed when teaching writing techniques in the classroom.

As a teacher, I guided students through the steps of writing, including brainstorming, outlining, rough draft, peer review, editing, and final draft and proofreading.

My work as a technical writer, while a different class of writing, is similar in regards to proper grammar, sentence structure, mechanics, editing and proofreading.

Writing is an art, but also a technique that can be taught and learned, when taught correctly. It is one of my favorite things to do.
