Hello My name is Amber. I studied Spanish and Journalism while in college. For a semester, I studied with native students at La Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. It was a great experience allowing me to be fully immersed in the language and culture. I shadowed a reporter with a cultural beat while in Xalapa. I interviewed poets, a director, a former ambassador to India and many others.
I also love writing. I learned the fundamentals of essay writing in college. I served on the college's newspaper for 5 years. For 4 years, I was a staff writer. Amber is helping my middle school first year Spanish student immensely. She is very patient and uses such a variety of interesting, FUN methods of teaching. She will bring flash cards, work sheets, etc. to the lessons to assist him. In addition she goes over homework, tests, and everything else. She is fabulous and we are so thankful we found her!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been an assistant with a beginner's adult ESL class for over four years. I have helped students from all over the world. At times, I did activities and taught concepts to one group of students while the teacher taught another group. Also, I interpret and translate for the native Spanish students who need to temporarily discuss with someone in their native language the concepts that they are learning. But they are weaned to using less of their native tongue in class and using more English to further enhance their learning experience. As an assistant, I have worked one-on-one with many students who have successfully graduated the program. I have learned games and techniques to make classes interesting and apply concepts learned in class.
I love the Spanish language. I majored in Spanish in college. I worked as a bilingual customer service representative for 3 years. My approach to tutoring Spanish is to keep it simple and incorporate the Spanish language in different ways. Students will listen to the target language, study grammar, practice conversation, read in Spanish, watch videos in Spanish, etc.
