Consciousness Studies (Master's)
Philosophy and Religion (PhD)
As a tutor of several years, K through 8th grade, I learned a great deal about how to help children feel confident in English, Grammar, Spelling, and Basic Math. Most of my experience took place at a tutoring center in Oakland CA where I also tutored in at least three public schools, assisting where English was the second language.
As an artist and digital artist, I taught Flash animation at Mills College in Oakland to summer camp children ages 10 through 12 during two summers. Later, in Denver, I facilitated a summer KidArt Camp class for teens titled Art and Physics at the Art Students League where I was a staff member and instructor for several years before moving to Ohio.
During the years that I was tutoring, I was also working on a Masters degree and a Doctorate degree. Although my PhD is in Philosophy and Religion, the concentration is Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness with a focus on the consciousness of children where I include several disciplines concerning prenatal, birth, and early childhood in addition to the education of children. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have exhibited my art work since 1978, and have had the opportunity to facilitate a variety of art techniques with children and young teens including the following: drawing and computer art and graphics at Campbell Memorial High School, Flash animation at Mills College, Oakland CA (ages 10 to 12), and summer KidArt Camps at the Art Students League in Denver CO.
I have tutored and taught children from ages three through 17. For three years, l was a part-time facilitator of computer activities and learning skills in a preschool environment. I was an instructor at a summer KidArt Camp and worked with young teens in 2007 and 2008. I co-taught ten to 12 year-olds during the summer of 2011. I also privately tutored a twelve-year-old in phonics, spelling, reading, and math who had issues with ADD. His school work much improved from that point on. For five years, I was the head teacher and tutor at a tutoring center where I facilitated instruction in math, reading, and writing with five to 17 year-olds. For one year, I was a part-time staff member/teacher at a Sudbury School, working with five to 16 year-olds in 2002 and 2003. in addition, I was a computer animation instructor for ten to 12 year-olds in a summer arts program in 2000 and 2002.
I have been an exhibiting artist since 1978; a painter in watercolors and acrylics and a digital artist and animator. During the past 15 years, I have had the opportunity to facilitate a variety of art techniques with children and young teens including the following: drawing and computer art and graphics at Campbell Memorial High School, Flash animation at Mills College, Oakland CA (ages 10 to 12), and summer KidArt Camps at the Art Students League in Denver CO.
I have several years of experience working with groups of children as well as one-on-one at a tutoring center. Phonics was one area of focus, easy enough for me since I had a strong phonics background in my own education.
I developed an especially helpful, relaxing, and successful phonics learning technique with a 12-year-old who had some ADD issues. We used very large sheets of paper where he wrote large and added color-coding so that it resembled art work. He hung these sheets in his room and hallway at home where the information went in nearly by osmosis, changing the sheets as needed.
I was a Head teacher and tutor at Springback Learning Center in Oakland, CA for several years tutoring five to 18-year-olds in math, reading, and writing.
During one school year, I was a staff member at a school where the child leads in his or her educational process.
When I work with a child, my intention is to understand his or her individual learning process and to develop personalized techniques that will bring out the best in that child.
