About Kathy

I am a retired special education teacher with a current teaching certificate in special education and an expired one in regular education. I have patience with students in regular education, special ed and students with ADHD. When my children were young, I did private tutoring and substituted in regular education. My years in special education were spent as an intervention teacher, and a full class ED and LD teacher.

I presently teach a GED class for 4 hours a week. I would like to resume tutoring children, as I so enjoy working with them. My rapport with children is very good, and they warm up to me quickly. I specialize in tutoring in reading and math, grades K-6.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught special education classes for 30 years. Many of these students had a diagnosis of ADD/ADHD. I am familiar with learning and behavioral techniques that will impede their learning skills.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught special education for 30 years for grades K-8. These students usually did not exceed over 6th grade material. I am presently teaching a GED class which includes much basic education material.

Elementary Math

I have taught math to students from grades 1-8. Much of my experience is with special education. This has given me a lot of experience in helping students that have a difficult time in certain areas.

Phonics

I have a Masters in Reading, which included courses in the best ways to teach reading and phonics. I have 30 years experience in teaching children in special education how to read and/or improve their reading skills.

Reading

Since I taught special education, I have dealt with children that have trouble with reading concepts. I especially enjoy increasing students' comprehension abilities. Getting my Masters in Reading has really been an asset to me in improving reading skills.

Special Needs

I have experience in teaching special education for 30 years. I have taught as an intervention specialist and a classroom teacher for ED and LD. I am very familiar with IEP's and working towards the goals that they contain.

Study Skills

I have taught special education classes for 30 years. Many of my students lack study skills. The main reason for this is that they are unorganized and have focusing problems. I enjoy making charts for this type of student and guide them into improving their study skills.
