About Laura

In the past 23 years, I have worked as a TESOL teacher for the Cleveland Metropolitan Schools in grades Kindergarten, first, second and third. I am mostly experienced in teaching English as a Second Language to non-native English speakers. I have taught all subject matters such as reading, math, science and social studies. I enjoy incorporating music, dance and games during my teaching. I speak, read and write Spanish fluently since I am a native from Puerto Rico.

If I would be tutoring in reading, I would give some basic assessments in alphabet recognition, sound recognition and blending and segmenting sounds in words. I would make sure the student works in building basic sound combinations to blend and phonetically read words. I would then incorporate some memorization techniques to help student also learn high frequency words e.g.(a, me, my, the). Students they would learn to read some basic sentences applying their knowledge of the high frequency words (Dolch list), and phonics. Vocabulary will be introduced as its incorporated in the reading.

If teaching Spanish as a second language, I would use the Comprehensible Input method. This method helps students learn basic communication patterns as they learn basic parts of the language. Pronouns, nouns and verb patterns will be first presented and later adjectives and adverbs. The use of picture dependent text and conversation will be used to support the instruction. Many of the reading techniques used in the English reading method can also be incorporated into the Spanish tutoring.

Basic math facts will be introduced using some simple strategies as counting on, counting backwards, using the ten base. The use of manipulatives and drawings will be part of my tutoring practice to assist the student to visulize mathematical concepts.

I look forward into using some of these and other skills to help the student advance in their learning process.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am presently teaching for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. I have successfully taught grades K through third grade. Even though my Bachelor degree is in Early Childhood Education, I also have a Master degree in TESOL and I am certified to teach students from K through adulthood. I also have experience helping my grandchildren throughout their time in elementary school. I am familiar with the curriculum for the older elementary students and open to helping students that are fourth through sixth grade.

Phonics

I have taught grades K-3 for over 20 years. During this time, I have received professional development in phonics. Part of my training included the Reading First grant training program in phonics, phonolical awareness and grammar. I also have a teaching endorsement in TESOL, part of which involves training in phonics.

Spanish

I am a native speaker, reader, and writer of Spanish. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and attended all my life in schools there including the University of Puerto Rico.
While studying at the University of Puerto Rico my Major was in Education.
I have a TESOL endorsement and an Early Childhood Education certification with a Master in Education. I have worked as an elementary school teacher for 25 years. During that time I taught Spanish speaking students reading in Spanish.
