Hello! My name is Derek and I am an AYA Mathematics graduate from Bowling Green State University. I have been a high school math teacher for 1 year, teaching Algebra 1 and Statistics. The subjects I enjoy teaching most are Algebra courses and geometry courses, but I am comfortable teaching any grade level.
I have many years of experience with tutoring students. Most of this experience has come from my time at BGSU where we were required to spend a few hours a week in a classroom to fulfill our field experience requirements. I have also gained lots of experience through my first year of teaching. My approach to helping students solve problems is by initially asking them what they think and to provide guidance in a way that allows the student to figure out a solution by themselves. I think this approach is more effective in helping a student maintain the information as opposed to just telling them what they should do and leave them wondering why they should just do what I tell them.
I have taken several advanced math classes in college and currently hold a license to teach mathematics in grades 7-12. I believe I have the necessary knowledge to work with high school students as I have passed my OAE for my initial teaching license in Mathematics in January 2019. I am eager to work with any child who may need help and I am looking forward to gaining even more experience with working with students to use in my future career.
I am very open to working with any student and would love to get my tutoring career started!
