About Teresa

Greetings!

My name is Teresa, and I am a licensed teacher in Ohio (Grades 1-8, All Subjects). For 19+ years, I have taught in a variety of educational settings, from elementary schools through middle school to international and undergraduates as well as homeschooling my own children. Currently, I am a substitute teacher and substitute instructional aide with the Bowling Green City School District. I hold a M.A. in Cross Cultural and International Education, a M.Ed. in Reading, and a B.S. in Education from Bowling Green State University.

I am a life-long learner and enjoy many volunteer and community activities, and strongly believe in bringing the real world into every learning opportunity. I have participated as a living history re-enactor, volunteered as a planning team member for an international service group, actively participated in election day services, and belonged to an herbal society that tends to local historical gardens.

I believe in actively engaging students and involving them in the learning process as well as encouraging their interests and natural talents as part of their studies and developing ideas for learning and completely tasks and assigned work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

ADD/ADHD was one area of diagnosis that was a part of my graduate experience while earning my master's degree.

Dyslexia

I have earned a Master of Education degree in Reading from BGSU. My graduate experience included the following:

I conducted all *diagnostic testing, report writing, and interpretation/findings (All manner of testing, reporting, and screenings done under strict rules and practices of client confidentiality.)

I participated in neurological screening/testing.

I administered formal/informal assessments and reading inventories.

I developed and provided literacy intervention instruction to clients and held parent conferencing during Saturday School Program and Secondary School Clinic.

I participated with school IEP meetings.

I served as an America Reads Challenge Program supervisor/co-coordinator.

I have administered diagnostic tests including: Woodcock Diagnostic Reading Battery, Test of Memory and Learning, Test of Written Expression, Slingerland Screening Tests for Identifying Students with Specific Language Disabilities, Comprehensive Receptive and Expressive Vocabulary Tests, Brown ADD Scale, Test of Written Language, Detroit Test of Learning Aptitude-P, 3, 4, Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing, Key Math, Comprehensive Test of Non-Verbal Intelligence, and the Test of Language Development.

Elementary (K-6th)

I possess a current 5-Year Professional Teaching License in the State of Ohio for Grades 1-8 in all subject areas.

Phonics

As an elementary teacher, phonics is an area covered under my teacher training and working experiences. I also took numerous English classes as an undergraduate and I am currently enrolled in a graduate level Modern English Linguistics class and phonology is a major part of this study.

Social Studies

I took Social Studies as a Methods class during my undergraduate teacher training program at BGSU. I also taught Social Studies during student teaching. It is also one of the inclusive subjects I am licensed to teach. As well, I have participated for many years as a living history re-enactor and gained valuable insight into history and geography and world studies (having traveled/lived internationally).
