After college I began my career as an art teacher in Lexington Ky. My students and I won a grant for 2 murals that we designed and executed in Harrison Elementary the Arts Magnet School. These murals commemorated the bicentennial of the US Constitution and illustrated several historical events. They covered two of the cafeteria walls.
From there I went on to attend the University of Kentucky where I picked up my first graduate degree and certification in Elementary. When we moved to Ohio, I attended Xavier University where I earned a Masters in Elementary Ed and my Ohio certification for Kindergarten thru 8th grade. Xavier specializes in Montessori Education a multi sensory approach to education which I apply in my teaching. I went on to teach in Dayton for over 20 years, both as a classroom teacher and as a language intervention teacher. In my instruction I use teacher made manipulatives to convey better understanding. Fourteen of my 18 students in junior high were accepted into DECA program (an early college program) at the Univ. of Dayton. I love to teach and I look forward to this opportunity to tutor.
My mother and grandmother were teachers. I love to teach and especially to see children succeed. I have had a very successful career and I hope to help move more students on to success and high self esteem thru tutoring. My experience is with students from preschool and into high school. I work with Math, Language, Science, Reading and Social Studies.
My degree in Montessori has prepared me to teach phonics. One of my early principals bragged about how well my first grade class could read. I have the materials and the skill to teach students to be good readers. With little ones I use songs and art to anchor the phonic information. As a middle school science teacher, my 7th and 8th grade students took 1st and 2nd place in the district science fair and went on to the regional contest.
Please contact me, so I may help you achieve success. Generally I recommend weekly sessions. But if there is a special need to catch-up on work or prepare for a test, I can make myself available. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
