I am a highly-skilled, well-versed social sciences educator. I have experience working with students from Kindergarten through college, and I know how to help your child achieve academic success. Whether it is preparing for an OAA or OGT exam, getting that extra boost to help their social studies grade, or adding that final bit of study for a college final, I am the social studies tutor you want. I have been a highly-rated college teaching assistant, a successful student and substitute teacher, and considered to be an expert in my content area. I will not let you or your child(ren) down.
My tutoring methods are based upon direct instruction with individuals, small, or large groups. I will tailor interventions and lessons based upon information you share with me about your child. For example, if they love comic books, I will find lessons that effectively use comic books to help them learn what we are studying. It is my one-on-one approach, and my specific approach to each student that sets me apart from all other tutors. I am a highly-skilled, well-versed social sciences educator. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach this subject because not only do I bring experience teaching history, I have a background in music, and religion. As an integrated social studies teacher, I am trained to teach all realms of the social sciences, including the classics. My understanding of the classics includes a broad-based knowledge set which includes art, music, religion, literature, government, and history.
Prior to going into education, I spent 12 years working in the criminal justice system as a Court Officer, Records Officer, and Investigator. I have first-hand knowledge of the criminal justice system from the practitioner side of things, as well as the academic background regarding criminal justice. I have taken classes hosted by the Ohio Peace Officer's Training Commission, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Ohio Township Association, amongst others relative to issues in the Criminal Justice field. I have served on various committees related to public safety and law enforcement, and still remain active in several law enforcement organizations.
I can help students prepare for the principles of learning and teaching Praxis, as my score was fairly high. Additionally, I can help students prepare for the social studies Praxis, as I scored at the top of the average scores on every subject. As a social sciences educator, I can not only provide students with the professional information they need for the PLT, but the content area knowledge they need for the Social Studies test.
As a former public official, I had to speak to groups large and small, and use a variety of techniques to convey my message. From informative to persuasive to technical and descriptive, I can mentor others in the art of public speaking. Additionally, as an educator, I use techniques learned both in the classroom and in the field to help individuals get over their fear of speaking to large groups, or groups of any size, for that matter.
As a Social Studies teacher, I am expected to have a basic understanding of religions in the historical sense, which I can teach. Additionally, as a former lay minister in the Catholic Church, I understand the role of the church hierarchy, how it has evolved over time, and how it fits in to today's society. Finally, I can teach religion in the context of how it co-mingled with governments, how certain areas of the world are more prone to being home to a given religion, and the influence religion can have on society.
I have experience working with students of all skill sets from the elementary grades to college. I have taught at the K-12 level, as well as the college level, and I can work with students using direct instruction (lecture), artifact-based instruction, technology-based instruction, or other pin-pointed interventions to assist students grasp concepts.
I was a competitive swimmer for over a decade, where I had over 100 individual and relay victories. Additionally, I coached for 5 years at the YMCA level (certified coach); served as a lifeguard for 3 years; and taught swimming lessons for nearly 6 years. As a swimmer, I have taught, led, encouraged, and coached hundreds of swimmers to success in and out of the swimming pool.
