Bio

I am a retired elementary teacher with 36 years of teaching. I tutored in the summer using the Wilson Reading and Phonics Program. I loved this. It was rewarding to watch non-readers reading. I have tutored many students in these 36 years. I volunteer in a local preschool. I enjoy this for two reasons--the teacher was my former third grade student and many of the students are children of my former students. I love watching the kids learn. I did teach both first and third grades. The last few years, I was the Literacy Alignment Coordinator working with 150 teachers, grades K-8. It was different but rewarding. I helped first year teachers with problems in their classrooms. I often when into their rooms to help students one on one. I believe that I was put on this earth to help children learn.

I participated in Project Discovery many years ago. I learned so many different ways to incorporate math skills in the classroom. It cannot just be black and white. There has to be hands activities. I recently facilitated a family night doing hands-on science and math activities. The parents were the partners. It made math more exciting and yet learning was definitely evident.

Grammar was my favorite subject as a child. I love it. I often correct my grandchildren. I believe that once you learn the correct grammar and use it daily, it is just the way you will always speak.

I am not as familiar with the Common Core as I am with the State Standards. I believe that the idea is basically the same. I worked with the standards and aligning them to our curriculum for 8 years. I worked with our district and several other districts in Ohio. I believe that it is important to stress that the teachers are not being told how to teach, but what. After that, extra help and support could be given if one has difficulty with specific standards/Common Core.

I believe that after having 36 successful years of teacher, I would be a effective tutor. I love being around the students even the difficult ones. Some students need to be channeled. They often act out because they cannot read, they are behind, and are embarrassed. These can be overcome to learn and succeed.

Working at an academy in Columbus in the summer gave me insight to what works with children who are behind in their school work. I would like to be given the chance to give you the chance to learn and be successful. My schedule is flexible and would work around your schedule.
