I am an English, Art, or Elementary School Tutor with a Juris Doctor degree, cum laude. At Reed College I majored in English. At that time I also obtained a Teaching Certificate for High School English.
My experience raising my children has taught me patience and creativity. Currently I have been tutoring a six year old who rejected books. Now, after bringing her pop-up books, she has made great headway in reading, and looks forward to seeing which new library book I will bring to the tutoring session.
Recently, I wrote a short book entitled "Swords into Plowshares," which discusses how the U.S. can strategically cut military spending while maintaining a strong defense force, and then use those savings on domestic needs.
I went to art school once a week from kindergarten through eighth grade at the Cleveland Museum of Art, took many art classes in college, and currently make greeting cards. I also have recently designed a Glass Entrance Way for a building in Jerusalem, and am in the process of lining up a glass artist to collaborate with on the project. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I attended art school at the Cleveland Museum of Art once a week, from kindergarten through eighth grade. I took many art classes at Reed College, including drawing, ceramics, painting, and sculpture. I have also taken Glass Blowing at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Currently I make greeting cards. I also am in the midst of seeking collaboration for a Glass Entrance Way for a building in Jerusalem.
In High School I tutored a third grade student in reading, and after working with him for one school year he went from being behind his class by one year to being ahead of his class by one year.
Recently I have been a tutor for a kindergarten student and a second grader. During the time that I have worked with them the kindergarten student has greatly advanced in reading and spelling, and the second grader has advanced in math and has learned to write in script.
I attended art school at the Cleveland Museum of Art once a week, from kindergarten through eighth grade. In public school I took many art courses at Byron Junior High School and at Shaker Heights High School. Those classes taught me how to paint using opaque watercolors. I made two of my favorite works in opaque watercolors. One has marbleized reds and oranges in the back- ground, with a black ink drawing of a wise man in the foreground. The other is a grey figure of a modern dancer reaching to the Heavens.
I took many art classes at Reed College, including drawing and oil painting. I learned how to make light washes of color by adding large amounts of turpentine to the paint. Then, I would block out the main colors on the canvas with those washes. Then, I would put in the major shapes with thicker paint, mixed with a little turpentine and linseed oil, and finally, with the thicker paint I would put in the details. I learned how to work the whole painting as an integral whole. In college I did studies of live models as well as studies of some of my favorite paintings. I painted studies of Derain's Portrait of Matisse and Matisse's Red Studio. My own style in painting is a combination of realism with symbolism.
