About Kathy

I have been a private tutor for over 20 years but have been tutoring since I was in high school. I am especially proficient in math - including higher level math such as Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II, and Trigonometry. I also work with younger students with beginning reading and math problems. I am a published author and an adjunct English professor, so my writing skills are superior. I have tutored all ages from preschool to adult and most subjects. I have also tutored a wide variety of subjects including preparation for the GED, ACT, SAT, and OGT. I have done everything from work with preschoolers who needed help learning the sounds of letters to an adult who needed help passing the math portion of the test to get into the FBI. I have had recent background checks and substitute teach in a variety of school districts for all grades, so I am in touch with Common Core Standards and the most recent expectations of schools and teachers. I have literally helped hundreds of students to succeed over the last several years and come highly recommended by students and parents. I hold a Master's degree in education and am only a few months away from receiving my doctoral degree. I promise you results when you and your child work with me! Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am an English professor with a Master's degree in education. I also am currently working on writing my dissertation for my doctoral degree. I have helped dozens of students succeed on the ACT in the past. I am proficient in all areas of the ACT but most especially in English and math.

ADD/ADHD

I am qualified to tutor students with ADD/ADHD because I have been doing so for over 20 years. I have tutored students who were on medication and those who were not. I have also worked with many students with ADD/ADHD in the regular classroom as well as in resource rooms at area schools. I have taken courses at the Master's level teaching me how to work with these students to help them stay focused and on track.

Algebra 1

I have tutored high school math since I was in high school. In addition, I have a Doctorate degree in education and give each student the individual attention he needs to succeed. I love math, and while I know not everyone does, I am often told by my students that I am able to explain mathematical concepts in a simpler and more understandable way than their textbooks or teachers do.

Elementary Math

I have been a private tutor for over 20 years. I have been a classroom teacher and substitute teacher for 15 years. I have a Master's degree in education and have spent most of my time working with elementary students. Math is my specialty, and I also have the creative ability to make learning fun as well as functional.

English

I have a Master's degree in education with an emphasis on elementary and middle school English/language arts. I am a published author with one novel and fifty online articles to my credit. I also am only a few months' away from receiving my doctoral degree.

More importantly, I have the creative ability to make learning fun and effective at the same time. Students enjoy working with me while learning necessary skills at the same time.

Geometry

I have tutored Geometry for many years. I have also taught Geometry in the classroom and helped my own children with the subject. I have a passion for math, and I am able to convey easier and more understandable ways to do Geometry problems than textbooks or notes usually do.

Praxis

I have taken the Praxis and have been a teacher for almost thirty years. I have tutored the Praxis several times in the past, and my students have all been successful when taking it after working with me. I am qualified to tutor all sections of the Praxis, but I am most especially qualified to tutor math.

Prealgebra

I have been a private tutor for over 20 years. I have a Doctorate in education and teach part-time at the college level. I pride myself in my patience to work with students, especially in math - at all levels, because math is one of my favorite subjects. Students often tell me that I explain concepts to them in much simpler terms than their teachers or textbooks. Students I have tutored in math stop coming to me because they no longer need my help because I teach them learning strategies they can use now and in the future. This is especially important for anyone with a language disorder or learning disability.

Public Speaking

As a college professor for three years, I practice public speaking every day I teach. I have also given dozen of presentations over the years to groups of students, teachers, colleagues, and supervisors. My public speaking experience has ranged from giving a book talk at a library about a novel I published to speaking at a conference of English teachers. I have also taught a Listening and Speaking class to college students.

Reading

I have a Master's degree in education with an emphasis on middle school language arts. In addition to the information I have already provided, I think it is important to note that I am creative and make learning fun and enjoyable. Students like coming to me for tutoring, and I feel sure your daughter will, also.

Study Skills

I have been a tutor for more than 20 years. I have helped countless students learn organization and study skills. I have worked with students on how to use strategies for taking tests as well as other study skills including but not limited to: multiple choice, matching, extended response, short answer, true/false, and fill-in-the-blanks. Study skills are incorporated into everything I do when I tutor.
