About Austin

I am a recent graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with a double concentration in Vocal/Piano Performance. Throughout my collegiate experience, I was a brother of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity, and served as the Music Director, Vice President, and Current Province Music Director as well as becoming a brother of Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity.

As a musician, I play piano and percussion with the EUP Symphonic Wind Ensemble and Marching Band, and also sing Baritone with the EUP Singers and Chorale. In addition to ensembles, I perform regularly as a soloist for the department's Student Recital Series and "Music Major for a Day" recitals. I have been playing piano since I was about 12 years old, and have taught Voice, Piano, and Musical Theory lessons in the local Community Music Schools for the past two years.

Outside of school, I have been asked to perform at various churches in Northeastern Ohio and Northwestern Pennsylvania, and have served as Music Director for the Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, Williamsfield United Methodist Church, and St. Philip's Churches in Andover, OH and Linesville, PA.

My teaching style is very energetic. I always try to maintain a flow in my lessons, so that the student 1) doesn't get bored and 2) is always learning something. There is always a reason for me explaining things or giving you an exercise. With a subject such as music, learning is not simply about being able to tap back a rhythm or sight sing perfectly. Music, in general, is an aesthetic experience, and in order to truly learn the power and grace that music has, one must be willing to understand the inner beauties and have a great appreciation for what music can do. Once a student is willing to understand the beauty of music and really have a love for it, then the real learning can begin.

I want my students to be able to understand what learning music will do for them by using both parts of their brain simultaneously, developing better hand/eye coordination, and learning how to think through something more critically and analytically than before, but always asking why. I never want my students to settle for what is, but to look for what could be.

I have taught over 750 students in my time from Preschool all the way to adult students.
