About Karen

Dear prospective student,

My name is Karen and my passion has always been in the STEM fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics! I am a math & science tutor. Please take a moment to learn more about me and my approach to tutoring.

I received my doctoral degree in cellular & molecular biology in 2012 with a major in cell biology, minor in physical biochemistry and a minor in cancer biology from Kent State University. I also have a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Toledo with additional training in applied mathematics. As a biomedical engineer/cell biologist I have extensive knowledge of biology, anatomy & physiology, biochemistry, physics, thermodynamics, statistics & computers. I have worked as a biomedical researcher for over eight years, and I have several patents pending in the area of cancer research & drug development.

I worked previously for three years as professional tutor for the University of Akron where I tutored a variety of subjects including; algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus I & II. I also participated in UA’s Assisted Learning Program where tutors attended the classes with the students and served as a personal tutor for that course. As part of this program I held tutoring sessions twice a week in addition to my regular tutoring hours. As part of this new tutoring program lead by Dr. Pamela Hollinger I attended a special summer course dedicated to understanding the needs of students including targeting learning styles (audio, visual, kinesthetic) and level of knowledge (Bloom’s taxonomy) enabling me to adjust my tutoring lessons to fit the needs of each student. Taking the time to look at how the student learns greatly aids in the preparation of effective lessons and heightens student success. In addition, I teach students tricks for memorization, highlighting, problem solving and making flashcards. Over the course of my academic career I discovered that we learn best when we can relate the material to something in real life. I like to use real-world examples to provide a better understanding of the material.

In addition, during my graduate studies I supervised and was a mentor/teacher for several honors undergraduate students at Kent State University & visiting students from Hudson high school. All of my students have gone on to be successful graduate students in areas including; pharmacy, physiological ecology, biochemistry & biomedical sciences.

Finally, I encourage students to contact a tutor before the subject becomes overwhelming. It’s always easier to make small corrections to keep you on track rather than going back to basics half way through a semester. Regardless, I am dedicated to putting students on the path to academic success!

Sincerely,

Karen M.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
