About Kathy

Although new to Wyzant, I have over 5000 hours of tutoring experience. I have been a math, science, reading and writing tutor for over 2 years. Before that, I developed my own curriculum to teach math (algebra II, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and AP Calculus AB) and physics at a private school in Baltimore. Trained as a biomedical engineer, I find teaching to be an extremely rewarding way to foster deep learning in students and to prepare a future generation of scientists, mathematicians, and citizens of the world.

I specialize in tutoring math, science, and English (critical reading, grammar, and essay writing) for achievement in school and on the SAT and ACT. Whether you are learning solving differential equations with separation of variables, kinematic equations, or the rules of grammar parallelism, one of my goals is find a way to make the knowledge accessible to you. I assign homework after every session and conduct every session with an eye toward the future.

My favorite subjects to teach are calculus, physics, chemistry, and biology; however, I am equally happy teaching critical reading skills, grammar rules, and essay writing strategies. I believe that every student has the capability of being a star student, and I hope to foster intellectual curiosity in each of my students.

My track record is stellar. My students have earned top scores on the SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests including physics, chemistry, biology, and math levels 1 and 2. These students have gone on to some of the best private schools, boarding schools, and colleges in the country including Phillips Exeter, Harvard, MIT, UPenn, and Georgetown. I enjoy teaching students of all levels, whether you are aiming for a perfect score or just trying to improve your score.

I am available to come to your home or to meet at a public place (coffee shop, etc.) for tutoring. I believe that my style of one-on-one tutoring will provide me with an opportunity to show you the true joys of math, science, and analytical thinking in general.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

I taught AP Calculus AB in a classroom setting, with most of my students earning 4s and 5s on the AP test. I, myself, took AP Calculus AB/BC when I was in 10th grade, scoring 5s on both tests. As an engineer, I've used calculus in its many forms to solve real-world problems, and I have a deep understanding of the applicability of calculus to the real, physical world.

SAT Math

I have been an SAT Math tutor for over 2 years. I especially love to tutor the SAT Math II subject tests (both level 1 and 2). I have many students who have earned perfect scores on their SAT Math sections and tests.

SAT Reading

I have taught SAT Critical Reading skills and vocabulary for over 2 years. I teach critical reading test taking strategies as well as try to foster an appreciation for a deep understanding of each reading passage.

Kathy is fantastic!

Kathy was encouraging and challenging. She not only covered material currently being covered in class but also anticipated what is around the corner and prepared for it. She brought useful worksheets and was very nice and easy going.
