Hi, my name is JP A., I am an Investment Product Strategist for a large global asset management firm. Before entering the business field, I worked for several schools and education programs such as the Sports and Arts in Schools Foundation and Champion Learning Center. My favorite job was when I worked for a NYC not-for-profit agency that brought me to the homes of several dozen poor and academically challenged kids across the Bronx, New York. I learned a great deal about tutoring, social work and life in general as I effectively "became a part" of the lives of these youngsters.
My tutoring approach has been described as "adaptable and thought provoking." I aim to customize my teaching style based on student needs while emphasizing 'fundamental understanding' over 'rote memorization' by way of employing a "big picture & thematic" approach to understanding contents. I believe students should be taught to systematically, thoughtfully and holistically develop opinions and ideas with strong conviction. They should also be able to express their understanding of contents in assortments of ways. I have a very relaxed and sociable personality but as an athletic-minded individual, I approach academic challenges like competitive sporting events - I'm in it to win it; ready to work hard and dedicate myself fully to the tasks at hand.
I have 6 years of experience in the Finance & Economics field, am nationally licensed as an investment professional (S7 licensed) and a candidate for the CAIA (Alternative Investment Analyst charter program) designation. I graduated from Bernard Baruch college with a major in Finance & Investments. I have been an active volunteer and board member for various not-for-profit organizations such as the Association of Latino Professionals for America, National Association for Black Accountants, Junior Achievement Program and the FCBC Church in Harlem.
I am deeply passionate about writing. Many of my works are oriented around the subject areas of Natural Philosophy and History. I am currently working on an assortment of projects including: "Tales from the Hill" (Series of essays chronicling the life of an inner-city kid making his way out of poverty); "Tales of Two Worlds (Series of essays analyzing significant dichotomies of the natural and nurtured worlds).
I tutor simply because I love to tutor and love to help people! Coming from a very modest background, I seized the help of many people along my journey and so paying forward that kind of service is natural to me; it truly makes me happy. My academic specialties are Economics and American History (and I can surely help with high performance baseball training). My tutoring motto is: The best you can do is the best you can do; focus on approaches that bring the best out of YOU! Come one, come all, my ONE promise is to partner with you and take on any academic challenge wholeheartedly! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
