Greetings! I'm Douglas, a mathematics teacher at The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY. I hold a B.S. in mathematics with a minor in philosophy and I absolutely love communicating math at all levels! I spent 3 years tutoring mathematics for my undergraduate institution, Allegheny College, and another 2 years after that tutoring privately before beginning my career as a private school teacher--I am now entering my second year of teaching mathematics in a classroom setting. Needless to say, I am deeply passionate about educating and enfranchising students in math.
My methods are that of conversational learning and working with students as they encounter difficulties, finding solutions and methods that make the most sense to the individual. I heavily employ examples and guide students by asking them questions, such that they learn math by doing it themselves rather than having it handed to them. I spend more time speaking with students who learn by listening and spend more time writing and drawing out work for those who learn visually. Private tutoring has taught me that no two students are alike, so I aim to suit my teaching style to students' individual needs and patterns of learning.
After the session is through, I assign students homework to complete before the next session: a couple mandatory problems, sometimes accompanied by a handful of extra practice problems. I provide students with my cell number so that if they find themselves stuck, they can reach me for guidance. I also keep records and notes on performance to chart progress, and in return, ask that my students and their guardians take time to evaluate the quality of my tutoring as often as they are comfortable doing so.
In tutoring at Allegheny, I found that half the battle is often inspiring a sense of mathematical confidence in struggling students. My time spent tutoring at the college level has made me not only a strong tutor, but also a good mathematical companion. I firmly believe that math is for everyone, and I'm always eager to prove that to the student who feels that she is unable to overcome her current mathematical difficulties. Private tutoring at Allegheny is reserved for those students who need it most and would otherwise fail, and I found that work to be most rewarding. Helping a student who has all but given up and watching him grow as a problem solver is what sustains my passion for sharing math. While tutoring privately after graduation, I developed a sense for instructing students in standardized test prep, and got a feeling for the unique circumstances of working with students of lower grade levels. This motivated me to seek employment as a high school teacher, and so far, I am loving it!
I am comfortable traveling to the student's residence to work, meeting in a quiet public space, or working at my home. As well, my hourly rate is flexible and always a function of the difficulty of the material in question, so please feel free to work with me to negotiate a fair rate. Group rates are subject to a small increase in price, and in general, I am flexible with my rate--especially when considering the difficulty of the material and what was required of me to master it.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I received an A in my ordinary differential equations class in college, and have helped students and classmates since. All have given me good feedback. I am confident that I have the skills to educate others in the topic.
I received As in both my Foundations of Mathematics and Combinatorics classes. I have strong proof-writing skills and have educated classmates and other students in this topic. I find the best way to tutor in discrete math is to tune the student's problem solving approach and proof techniques.
I have tutored students in finite math at the college level for 3 years. This has presented no challenges for me, and I have only ever received positive feedback. I find that for older students of finite math, the real crux of the tutoring lies in enfranchising the student and fostering a good relationship with mathematics.
I received an A in the undergraduate level class and formally tutored 4 different students in the topic. Furthermore, I have published research in operator theory, of which linear algebra is just an elementary case of the general theory of linear operators. I understand the difficulty of adjusting to linear algebra, as it is often the first brush students have with upper level proof based math. As a result, I take a pretty targeted in my approach, zeroing in on the very specific difficulties students have and the implications those difficulties will have for future content.
I received an A in my upper level Mathematical Logic class, which covered topics up through incompleteness and complexity in first and some second order logic. I have helped students with introductory logic topics for math, computer science, and philosophy. I have always received good feedback, and am positive that I can teach logic at a variety of skill levels for a variety of disciplines.
I have been programming with Mathematica for 3 years and am proficient in module building. I have completed projects in wavelet image recognition and run testing modules for analysis research. I do not have experience in coding for optimal resource consumption, but this is not a common concern in so powerful a software as Mathematica.
