Sarah Lawrence College (Literature, Writing)
I am an American-Israeli 24-year-old writer and editor in New Yorkk City. I graduated Sarah Lawrence College and spent a year at Oxford University. I have a 4.0 GPA. I studied Literature and Creative Writing at Sarah Lawrence, but I haven't always been so literary-minded - I completed high school math in 10th grade through a special program at Bar Ilan University in Israel.
My most recent tutoring experience has included working with children of varying ages (6-12) at San Andres Church in Yonkers and at St. John and Mary's Catholic School in Oxford.
I believe that literacy, and a child's ability to enjoy reading, are the most important things that can and should be taught. I believe that an inherent enjoyment of reading leads to a general enjoyment of learning, of all kinds - math and science can be joyful endeavors as well. As a student who still loves learning, both in and out of the classroom, independently and within a structured environment, I hope to be able to pass on a little bit of that enthusiasm to others. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent a year working as an editor at The Oxford Student newspaper in Oxford, England, where I worked regularly with Adobe InDesign in order to lay out the newspaper pages.
In addition, I helped design and edit a new magazine in Oxford, titled E&E, and worked closely with our graphic designer and editor-in-chief as we worked towards a deadline. We designed, laid out and altered to the printer's specifications a 62-page magazine, entirely from scratch.
I am a dual citizen of both Israel and the United States. I spent most of my life in Israel, from the age of 3 up to 19, right before coming to the United States for college. My mother is American and my father was raised in Israel, and they brought my up to be entirely bi-lingual. I took the Israeli equivalent of the IB exams, and am still entirely fluent in the language, as I go back to Israel for every vacation.
I have always been a PC user. I've seen Microsoft Windows evolve from its earliest stages - when I was a little kid, I used DOS and Windows 93, then 95, and now use Windows 7. I've needed to teach my mother and various other people in my life (mostly Mac users) how to navigate the world of PCs and Windows, and I am confident that I can show the ropes to any new user.
