About Shigemitsu

Mathematics can be a dry and boring subject for many students, but spend some time with me and I will make math enjoyable. In my classroom, my goal is to create an environment of joy and excitement by using hands-on activities and games. Time to time I joke around with my students or incorporate Japanese into my math lessons to liven up the mood. I am personable, carefree, and passionate at teaching mathematics.

Initially, I studied civil engineering for my undergraduate and earned a Master's degree in engineering management at Cornell University. I worked at two engineering firms after graduation, but I quit the two jobs because I did not feel any passion for those jobs.

On and off I have been tutoring and teaching mathematics for almost 10 years and I love doing it. This is why I decided to leave engineering and pursue becoming a math teacher. I earned my Master's degree in adolescent math education for 7-12 grade and am currently teaching middle and high school at CMSP 327 in the Bronx. My favorite classes to teach are Algebra I, Trigonometry, and Calculus, but I am well versed in all areas of math.

I am proud to work in a school where our instructional focus is to teach the basics from scratch. Our students outperform most schools in the city because they have a solid foundation to work on. If your child is struggling in math, he or she probably needs help honing down the basics and I have many tricks under my sleeve in every subject. Every child has their own learning style, so I tailor my lessons and tutoring sessions by using music, visuals, mnemonics, and manipulatives for best results.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I teach my students the rules AND the concept behind the rules. Students can apply the rules correctly when they have a good understanding of why these rules exist. As a classic example, what is the difference between 3x and x^3? Telling a student 3x = x + x + x and x^3 = x*x*x is only good for the short term retention and the rules can easily be mixed up. When approaching this problem, we should ask questions like what does multiplication mean? What does the 3 mean with respect to x? Can we explain 3x using a real situation?

In school, math concepts are often not taught because of the limited time teachers have to teach a multitude of topics. Come tutor with me and I will teach you the concepts behind the mathematics and lead you to success in the long run.

Calculus

I am very versed when it comes to Calculus. In high school I took AP Calculus and in college I took 3 calculus courses and two engineering math courses for my civil engineering degree. I received A's in all my math courses and graduated with honors.

Japanese

I've lived most of my life in Tokyo, Japan where I attended English-speaking American schools. This, and the fact that my parents are American and Japanese, allowed me to become fluent in both languages. I've also taken upper level college courses in which I translated Japanese literature into English and vise versa.

Please feel free to meet me and have a conversation in Japanese.

SAT Math

I have taught SAT math formally at two private tutoring institutions over two summers and have been tutoring SAT math individually for over 8 years. I have many resources and worksheets I can hand your child so that they can practice on their own between our sessions.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor.

Mr. S. was able to break down concepts simple enough for my son to understand. He took his time and explained methods and rationale. I would highly recommend Mr. S. for tutoring.
