About Faith

Hello!

My name is Faith. I have over 10 years of experience in Education, and 20+ years of Experience in Theater and the Arts. I have tutored kids from 4th grade to high school in the English, History, and Math. I have also taught SAT Reading and Writing classes for the past 9 years for one of the top test-taking companies in the New York area, Testtakers. I have received stellar reports from past students who, under my tutelage, received high marks on the SAT. I am invested in my students and refuse to see standardized testing as the horizon line by emphasizing the student's need to develop their individual voice and discovering what drives them so they might become more motivated and excited to learn. I taught a five-week course for a college-bound program for inner-city public high school youth where I found that creativity proves to be a valuable of resource in the success of these students as individuals and as test takers. We not only wrote essays and did drills, but we also played games, read books, watched movies, and had conversations that allowed for a deep understanding and knowledge of the material. I believe Arts Education is vital to the growth and understanding of ourselves in the larger context of our world. No matter what kind of learner you are, visual, musical, logical, spatial, I meet students where they are at and encourage students to learn at their own pace. I specialize in literature, grammar, writing, and vocabulary.

I am a poet, performance artist, and educator who believes that artistic expression as a basic human need. I am a teacher who wants to bring self-knowledge into our schools. I graduated from New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study where I titled my concentration of study "Celebrate Multiplicity: Reintegrating the Self through Creative Presence." It is invested in the idea that to be human is to live in two worlds be it the mental and physical, the eternal and temporal, the fiction and non fiction, light and dark, good and evil, heaven and earth, black and white. We define our world in opposites but it is this contradiction that acts as fuel for creation. We must embrace this inherent duality as a force that keeps our world spinning. We must walk the path towards reintegration through movement, mediation, and play. In creating this course of study, I pulled from a myriad of resources including ancient philosophy, mythology, social and natural sciences, psychology, literature, film, creative arts therapies, post-modern dance, movement and performance studies.

I currently reside at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony and have a wonderful space here to work. I will happily travel to wherever would prove most comfortable for you and your needs. I look forward to helping you achieve success in your studies and in life!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

SAT Writing

Teaching SAT Writing for the past 9 years has kept me on my toes in continuing to create fresh material and fresh approaches to the SAT questions. These questions require a strong understanding of grammar rules, logic, argument, and concision. With some out-of-the-box techniques, we can tackle them all. Once a student has learned to recognize the most common errors, most of the work is already done. Using actual SAT Tests, mnemonic devices, intriguing essay topics, and real world examples, I will help to show you just how relevant writing is to your day to day life.

Vocabulary

I've been teaching vocabulary to my SAT Reading and Writing Students using fun vocab games, writing exercises, thought clouds, and flashcards. There is no one way to learn vocab, but one must remain diligent and inquisitive. If a word comes up during the lesson that the student doesn't know I implore them to take the initiative and look it up. It is not enough to simply memorize words, we also must know how to use it. If a student connects with music, I tell them to make up a song using those words they simply can't remember. If he or she is more of a visual learner, I have them come up with an image to associate with the meaning of the word. Whatever your learning style is, I want to design a lesson that fits your needs and caters to your strengths.

Writing

Writing is my passion. I have been writing since I was a child and I still love to have fun with language. Being a writer, I love experimenting with voice, style, form, and vocabulary. I tend to look deeper below the surface when it comes to analysis. I can cut through the unnecessary fluff to get at the heart of any argument or raise questions to allow for a more well rounded and specific argument. Let me help you have fun with language again or at least help you organize your thoughts to present an essay both persuasive and captivating.
