About Dans

I taught chess to young people who show great enthusiasm in learning the game in the Philippines. Most of my students eventually became competitive chess players. Tutoring chess has been my favourite pastime, aside from helping conduct chess clinics and organize amateur chess tournaments in the community, because it delights me whenever the playing strength of my students reaches the expert level. I also became a coach/trainer of chess teams from different schools in the regional and national competitions in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines.

About the tutorial lessons, I teach the basic of chess and its strategy, develop an opening repertoire to include the myriad of opening theories, and how to play the transformation of the three stages of chess game. Once the students have shown significant progress to understand the insight on chess complexity, more advanced lessons are available for easy learning such as avoiding opening traps, tactics and techniques, combinations and sacrifices, attack and counterattack, positional or defensive play, endgame theories, etc. It is a good practice after every tutorial session for the students to play a few skittle or blitz games against me. The best way to learn chess is to study and practice it.

I am a candidate chess master (inactive) in the Philippines. During my collegiate years, I won several tournaments both in the provincial, regional and national level at Palarong Pambansa (National Games) and Young Men’s Christian Association. I also participated in numerous open and team tournaments after acquiring two college diplomas at Silliman University, the oldest university founded by Americans in Asia, in Dumaguete City. In most of the tournaments that I participated, I was always the champion and gold medallist.

According to former world chess champion Anatoly Karpov, “Chess is everything --- it is an art, science and sport.”

Because of work and family, I was not able to pursue a successful professional career in chess. As an inactive chess player for several years, I discovered there was something fascinating about chess tutorial. After a long hiatus, I saw the window of opportunity to contribute something rewarding for the development of chess by teaching chess to deserving students, particularly beginners and intermediary players, whenever I have the time to do so. Since that time, tutoring chess has been my favourite pastime and part-time work dedicated solely to enhance their ability to find strong moves and to compete in tournaments.

For interested parties, you may contact WyzAnt Tutoring for further information regarding tutorial lessons, subject to my schedule of availability to be conducted in person or your most convenient time. The students will be provided with e-book materials in portable document format (PDF) as needed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
