About Peter

I now teach US History Regents, AP US History and economics at a private high school in Westchester. 3/17
I was just offered and accepted a position to teach high school social studies at the Harlem Children Zone Promise Academy on 125th Street in Manhattan. I will begin teaching there in the summer/ fall of 2017.

I have worked as a teacher and educator specializing in the teaching of high school history for 20 years. I've taught Global History and Geography in New York for 8 years and spent much of the other time teaching English in China. I've also worked as a Principal and a Department Manager where I've been responsible for supervising, managing and training teachers. I've decided to work as a tutor so I can help individual students develop according to their own specific unique needs. I know from my experience that students learn in different ways and need focused attention to their particular strengths and weaknesses.

I graduated with Outstanding Academic Achievement Honors from the State University of New York at Binghamton where I studied International politics. I have a Masters in Social Studies Education from Queens College. In New York City, I taught all social studies courses at a Math, Science Research Magnet High School in Queens and at Brooklyn Technical High School, one of New York City's specialized high schools. I've taught AP American History and World History, IB (International Baccalaureate) Geography and Theory of Knowledge and was a Principal of Cambridge International High School in China where I was responsible for the quality of all classes at the school and monitored and observed all classes frequently.

How do I teach and tutor? First, I spend sufficient time to understand each student and his or her unique need. I approach teaching as a doctor approaches patients. Before I offer educational "medicine," I spend time to do an educational diagnosis. as I continue to work with the students and understand him or her more, I may adapt my approach to help the students develop his or her skills and knowledge.

I use humor and empathy to make students feel comfortable and at ease during my tutoring sessions. Yet students at the same time say that I am a strict tutor. They say that I am sometimes more serious than another tutors about making sure students really learn. I have no interest in wasting peoples time or money.

Finally, I believe that history and geography are inherently important to the future lives of students. History and geography expand students minds, deepen their understanding of the world and have the potential to change the way students think about themselves. Sure, students must take exams like New York State Regents and Advanced Placement, but if students understand how and why history and geography are important and interesting, I honestly believe that with a new sense of passion for the subjects in social studies, students can learn to see some of the exams as not as difficult as they once felt.

I am not looking to help any one kind of student. I believe that all students can improve with the right guidance and support. Struggling students can learn how to pass exams and develop higher goals. Students who are already achieving at high academic levels, can learn to ask more profound questions, consider new approaches and perspectives and develop advanced research techniques and methods.

I could also help your children in English. Recently, I have helped students prepare for the English Regents (Common Core) and have worked as a PSAT and SAT tutor in the past as well.

I look forward to the opportunity to help your children develop their knowledge and skills in social studies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I've taught American history in different high schools in New York City. I taught Regents level US History at a Math Science Research Magnet High School in Queens, New York and at Brooklyn Technical High School, one of New York City's top specialized high schools. Brooklyn Technical High School is #3 in NYC. (Stuyvesant is #1 and Bronx Science is #2). I taught Advanced Placement American History to the best students in the Queens Math Science Magnet High School. I have tutored students in the different boroughs of New York City and in many of the different cities, towns and villages in Westchester County. I read constantly to update, improve and refresh my knowledge so I can always improve as a tutor and teacher. I help students to think and understand history deeply. I help them to see connections between historical events and current events in US society and government. These methods help students improve their understanding which helps them to enjoy the subject more and improve their scores in school and on standardized exam.

Government & Politics

I graduated with a BA Degree in Political Science from SUNY Binghamton. I earned an Outstanding Academic Achievement diploma and continued studying towards my PhD in Political Science at the City University of New York Graduate Center in midtown Manhattan. I left the program to pursue a Masters in Social Studies Education at Queens College which I earned while I was teaching social studies at a high school in Queens.

I have helped many many students advance their understanding of US government and politics, comparative politics and world politics. I help students understand issues from the past and current issues which should allow them to consider what possible challenges we may face in the world tomorrow and in the future, and what solutions might be developed to meet those challenges for the betterment of society.

Political Science

I studied Political Science at SUNY Binghamton. I earned a 3.7 GPA in my major and graduated with Outstanding Academic Achievement Honors. I've taught government classes in New York City public high schools for 5 years. I was selected to teach at a Brooklyn High school, which is one of the best public high schools in New York City. I have a Masters in Social Studies Education from Queens College and studied 1.5 years of coursework towards my PHD in Political Science at the CUNY Graduate Center. I decided to leave to become a high school teacher. I read the NY Times everyday.

Social Studies

I have taught high school social studies in different schools in New York City and around China for more than 10 years. I've taught Global Studies, now often called World History and Geography, US History, Participation in Government, Economics and Psychology. I've prepared hundreds of students for the two Regents exams in social studies in New York: World History and Geography and US History and Government.

I have helped students who needed to build their skills and knowledge just to be able to pass these exams, and Ive also helped students master the knowledge and fill the gaps in their understanding so they could get scores in the high 80s and 90s.

I've also taught IB (International Baccalaureate) Geography, a 2 year advanced global issues course and AP (Advanced Placement) World History. Both of these courses require advanced high school students to read and understand issues world issues in depth and to be able to make connections across time and place. These courses challenge the best high school students to excel in the area of social science by deepening their knowledge of society to prepare them for more advanced study at some of the world's greatest institutions of higher learning like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford and Yale.

I graduated from SUNY Binghamton with Outstanding Academic Achievement Honors and earned a Masters in Social Studies Education from Queens College. I am permanently certified to teach social studies for students in grades 7-12. In 2000, I was selected to teach social studies at Brooklyn Technical High School.

World History

I have worked as a World History and Geography teacher for many years. I have helped hundreds of students pass the Global Regents exam, many with high scores in the 80s and 90s.
I have also taught IB (International Baccalaureate) Geography, an advanced two year world issues course, which requires students to read write and understand the world at a far deeper level than the New York State World History and Geography exam.

While much of the New York State Regents exam focuses on modern world history, students are required to show international connections and understand a great many events and issues from all of world history.
In order to help students achieve and excel, I lead students to ask questions that will make them think to truly understand the material. I relate the human issues in history to students' lives so they can see the purpose of learning history. This helps students to remember the material more easily and allows them to see the meaning of learning world history and geography.
Finally, I use my own experiences as a world traveler - I've been to 40 countries - to make the knowledge in students' school books come alive. I encourage my students to see the world and make it a part of their lives. There is so much that is interesting and exciting to know, see and experience in this world.
