About Justin

Thank you for considering my services as a tutor. I have an undergraduate degree in childhood and special education graduating summa cum laude.) In addition, I have a Masters Degree in Literacy (teaching reading.) I have eight years of paid experience and have worked as a teacher at the same school for the last five years. For the past two years, I have been rated highly effective on my measures of teaching (observations.) My goals are to provide students with strategies and skills to build skills at their developmental level. Additionally, I like to provide parents with suggestions as to how they can implement these strategies and skills with their child outside of a tutoring session. I also am willing to regularly communicate with your child’s teacher to see what skills they currently need to work on. I am willing to meet a quiet location such as a library or the student’s house.
In addition for two school years, I served as a literacy teacher in my school. In this position, I taught students in grades K-5 reading skills that paralleled those in their classrooms. These reading skills are all linked to improving reading and writing as well as to the Common Core. I can successfully break down content and teach skills such as drawing conclusions, main idea, fact and opinion, plot context clues etc. In addition, I have taught self-contained special education (grades 2, 3, 4, 5.) Due to the wide range of students I have taught or am currently teaching, I am constantly aligning my instruction with the Common Core Standards. I am fully aware of the shifts that the Common Core has had on learning and testing and have created materials that match these standards. Therefore, I have wide exposure to content and strategies that can be used to teach a wide range of learners. In terms of math instruction, I use hands-on techniques as well as visuals to aid students in grasping concepts. I emphasize real-world word problems when teaching math. To teach reading, I have utilized Wilson Fundations Program successfully in a mixed ability second grade self-contained special-education class. I have materials that I can use in a tutoring session. The majority of my 8 total years of teaching experiences has been with students with special needs. My students have had mixed classifications including Autism, Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability, Speech and Language Disability, and Other Health Impairment. I am extremely patient and can provide structured lessons that meet your individual child's needs. This year, I served on my schools IEP team and as a result have gained greater knowledge on how various disabilities can impact learning as well as strategies teachers can use to aid students who may have certain difficulties. Please contact me in order to learn more information. I would love to talk with you and see how I can best aid your child. I look forward to helping your child make academic gains.

Sincerely,
Justin
