About Amy

I'm a CPA that loves history and has had lots of experience with standardized testing. Once I've mastered an area, I like to share my tips for success.

I specialize in tutoring Accounting and CPA Exam, History, test preparation including SAT, ACT, & GMAT, and Microsoft Word, Excel, & PowerPoint.

I have a BA in History from Louisiana State University and an MBA in Accounting from Pace University in New York. I recently passed all four sections of the CPA exam, so I can relate to students on that level. I haven't forgotten what it's like to have the pressure to pass an exam and the need to maintain the focus that is necessary for success. I will work within the student's curriculum and assist with assignments, providing additional guidance for increased understanding when needed. Overall, my goal is to help my students succeed in their academic environment.

Throughout high school, I was an AP and Honors student. I studied AP American, AP European, and AP World History. My passion for history continued into college as I was admitted to the honors college and studied Ancient and Medieval Civilizations, including Ancient Greece & Rome, Medieval Europe and Ancient China. As a former AP history student, I understand the pressure that students face and hope to provide strategies for success.

I feel confident that these classes give me a great foundation to help my students succeed. Of course, if the student struggles with a topic in which I am not well-versed, I always look forward to learning new things.

In addition, I can help with GMAT prep. I took the GMAT prior to admission to graduate school. I was able to get a score of 570 the first (and only) time I took the exam using a Princeton Review test prep book and self-study. I'm confident I can help my students with necessary skills and strategies to achieve a high score on this exam.

In order to provide the best environment for the student, I prefer a location that is familiar to them in which they feel comfortable studying. For this reason, I suggest we meet at a local library or coffee shop, but I am open to sessions in other locations if that works best.

Academically and professionally, I've always held myself to high standards and will often seek feedback. I will never bill for a lesson in which my students or parents are not satisfied. However, I do ask in return that my students come with an attitude of willingness to learn and prepared with specific topics in which they need additional instruction. I will need to see a course curriculum or syllabus, assignments, and class notes pertaining to our tutoring session.

Please note that I require a 24-hour cancellation policy, with an option for a makeup session. I aim to be flexible because I understand that life is not always predictable.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals! Let's meet up for coffee to see if I'm a good match for your needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As part of my undergraduate curriculum, I took 6 credit hours relating to Architecture history. We covered the developments in buildings from ancient times, the Italian Renaissance, European Gothic, Bauhaus & modern architecture, and American Architecture. I did a research project on the structure and form of the Unity Temple by Frank Lloyd Wright and built an architectural model of the building.

As part of my BA in History I took 6 credit hours in the Honors College in Ancient Western Civilization, 6 credit hours in Roman Medieval Civilization, and 3 credit hours on the World of Alexander. The Ancient Western Civilization included a lecture and a seminar where we studied the history and literature of the ancient Greek and Roman empires, including the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the works of Plato, Socrates, etc. The Roman Medieval Civilization also included a lecture and seminar in which we studied Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire into the Middle Ages, with an intensive study of Dante's Divine Comedy. The World of Alexander focused on the Hellenistic World and the conquests of Alexander the Great.
